Frankenstein-Characters (Gestalt monsters)

It looks like I am going to be running Red Hand of Doom for a small (3 PC's) party. These are old highschool buddies of mine and scheduals have finally sorted themselves out to the point where we can game again.

One thing we decided to do though was play all the weird wonderful characters that we have never had a chance to before. I know there will at least be a silver dragon and a hound archon in the party and the other player I know plans on taking something from Savage Species as well.

Now most people I expect will accept that characters with a high (6+) level adjustment are significantly weaker compared to say a human fighter. Not only that but with only 3 players the party will be even weaker than normal. To combat this I'm considering allowing everyone to play Gestalt characters as long as one of their classes is a creature class.

Has anyone ever tried this before? How did it work for you? I know Gestalt characters are significantly more powerful than their normal counterparts so do you think this might overbalance things in favor of the PC's too much? I've never run a game with Gestalts before so any feedback anyone can offer me about what it's like to DM them would be appreciated.

urg. Mixing Level adjustements with actual character levels in a gestalt environment sounds like a recipe for disaster. Gestalt rules are fuzzy enough when applied to actual classes. It'll probably be easier to just let the characters have a level or two more than the adventure suggests.
