[FRCS] What was the time of troubles

Kelemvor never ascended to godhood during or close after the time of troubles.

He ascended when Cyric lost his mind (moreso than usual) because he read the Cyrinishad. He lost his death portfolio and Kelemvor took it. I think this happened about 10-15 years after the time of Troubles. It's in the book "the Prince of Lies."

But really what WAS it. what happened, and what allowed so many mortals to ascend to godhood, especially greater godhood (mystra)?

What it REALLY was, if I recall correctly (and it's 2 am here, so i may be delirious), was that TSR was changing from 1st edition to 2nd edition AD&D. That meant some pretty major changes had to happen in the Realms, to explain why the world was now operating by slightly different rules. For example, when Bhaal died, so did many of his followers, i.e., the removal of the Assassin from the game.

And I'll second that remark about the Formerly Dead Three. Good work, Napftor!

Naftor, were you the same guy that wrote those stories in the "Oh yeah baby, Bane is back" thread a while back.

If so, another fine piece of literary comedy.

That was me Joker! :D I remember your presence in that thread as well, don't I? Uh oh, hold on. They wanna say something again...

Bhaal: "Someone remembers us! I feel my power increasing!"
Bane: "Pfft. You don't have anything, idiot."
Myrkul: "He should, Bane. Divine power is based on worship."
Bane: "People in the Realms are worshiping ME. This Joker person remembers where our stories were discussed and definitely doesn't worship either of you. For an article of clothing designed to be worn on a person's intellectual center, you sure are dumb, Myrkul. I think you've been 'dead' too long."
Bhaal (to Myrkul): "Let's get him."
Myrkul: "For once, I'm going to agree with you. I was going to point out that even a mention of a god aids the divine essence, but now I won't bother."

[Two out of the Formerly Dead Three start to collect their powers for a strike. Bane readies a cruel-looking spiked gauntlet.]

Bane: "I'll take you both with one hand."

[At that moment, Myrkul and Bhaal vanish from sight!]

Bane: "Where are you, cowards!? Come back and face the Lord of Strife!"

[Bane's body then glows briefly before every article of clothing, save for the spiked gauntlet, disappears! The other Formerly Dead appear once again, giggling hysterically.]

Myrkul: "Looks...hehe...looks like you're Lord of Strife and Nakedness now!"
Bhaal (pointing at Bane): "Hehehehehe!!"
Bane: "I demand you return my regalia!"
Bhaal: "You're the god here. Do it yourself."
Bane (snapping fingers and finding himself clothed in poison ivy): "What the hells is this?!"
Bhaal: "Even gods are subject to wild magic fields, like the kind we just coated you with. Teehehe."
Myrkul: "And bear in mind that those fields are yet another outcome of our go-'round with Ao and the Tablets, and yada-yada."
Bane (scratching every part of his body uncontrollably): "You're both dead men, you hear me? Dead men!!"
Myrkul & Bhaal (together): "Duh! We know that already! Bwahahaha!!"

...And as we leave the Formerly Dead Three, Bane manages to conjure up some Benadryl cream while the other Two scamper away like giddy school-girls.

Guess I'd better be careful or one of the Mods will switch this to a Story Hour forum! ;)

I'm fairly new to the FR, and I've just recently began reading the books. In the FRCS and I do believe in Magic of Faerun, they touch on the time of troubles, or something like that. Now I know it had something to do with the changes from 1e to 2e, and the ascencion of ciryc, mystra, and kelemvor. But really what WAS it. what happened, and what allowed so many mortals to ascend to godhood, especially greater godhood (mystra)?

I really, really like FR but one piece of advice I would give you is don't read the novels. If you (and, ideally, your players) can use only the game products as your source material I think you'll find you have a much better game. The novels range from mediocre to terrible and they paint a picture of FR that is, shall we say, not as balanced as that painted by the RPG publications.

NB: Strictly IMO & YMMV.

In all seriousness, I doubt balance was a key issue during the writing of this trilogy. Gods killing gods and changing from 1e to 2e are both reasons to shake up the world. The authors were probably told to stir up the pot as much as possible so then no one would be quite sure (or even care) what edition FR was in afterward. I thought the novels were great fun and certainly gave you an insight into how gods think...not very differently than the common man. They just have a better vision of 'the big picture.'

One of my favorite parts was written in the FR Campaign Setting book for 2nd edition. It is said that, during the T.O.T. that when Bhaal took the souls of all of Faerun's assassins to gain power to himself, that half the town council of the Cormyrean city of Waymoot dropped dead on the spot. :)

The Time of Troubles would make a great campaign setting, because of all the godly avatars running around causing trouble, and the chaos of magic going totally awry - maybe for a few sessions or so.

Heh. I just might run a campaign during the ToT when I get F&P. Then, those listed above might not be the only gods to fall (and those listed above might fall under different circumstances). ;)
