No need to involve DM preferences. Just go with what the rulebook says. That way, it's much easier to disprove false claims about the game.
According to the rulebook, you lose HP when you get hit by an axe. If someone swings an axe at you, and they actually hit you, then you lose some HP and you'll be fine after a rest. That is what the rulebook says.

No one says you get hit physically by the axe, hence the description of hp from the srd:
Hit points represent a combination of physical and mental durability, the will to live, and luck.
As it's been for the game's 40 years.

But this is an old argument, as old as the game itself, and even the designers screw it up, so I'll bow out and not clutter the thread anymore.
 

Folks. Please. HP has been all these things to many people and meant opposite things too. It's the reason they are such a great mechanic. Arguing over the semantics seems like such a waste at the moment.
