Free background music for games

I recommend trying it - I have gotten so used to the background music in games that if I played a game without it, I presume it would feel a bit weird and probably a bit "hollow" also.

I just downloaded the Jester's Tear. WOW! It's better than some of the "professional" music that I have bought. Thanks for letting us use your work. Wonderfully done.

This stuff is really good! Thanks a lot for sharing your work with us. I think I'll definitely have to listen through this thoroughly and find stuff to pull out at appropriate moments. I'm one of those GMs that likes to have music just at the right moment. I do tend to try to play music constantly in combat, especially fast-paced stuff to keep the game moving when I'm not able to. This is all great stuff for background music though :)

So glad to hear you find the material enjoyable :) And yeah, I think that combat scenes are one of the places where music can play a really big part! Intense atmosphere can be created and enhanced with right songs even if the rhythm of the game wouldn't be that tight.

Some very, very good music choices there! Divinity is a little too flowing for me, but Essence is great. I'll take a look at Frozen Tears when I'm home.

Kudos!

Hi and thanks!

The stuff is magnificent, I more or less always have some appropriate music in the background during play as well as during the creative process and these songs definately fill out some blanks in my library. I haven´t had the time to listen to all of the songs but lets just say that as I sat in front of my computer last night writing future adventures my creativity was tickeled pink by some of your pieces. Great job!

Thanks! Glad to hear the atmospheres offer inspiration and ideas. And just noticed that you happen to be from Finland also, nice to meet a fellow finn :)

That's some great stuff. Thanks for making it freely available. I use music in my games all the time, and it does add atmosphere even when the players don't all like it. There's this one ambient tune that still makes all my players shudder because I played it during a particularly harsh part/area of the campaign.

And yeah, The Witch Hammer is awesome. Shinjuku Thief is a great inspiration for journeying in the wonderlands. I also use the Icewind Dale, Diablo 2, Summoner and Zork Nemesis soundtracks for adventuring.

Have to check out Zork Nemesis soundtrack some time. Actually I was quite surprised that you knew Shinjuku Thief - I have met only one guy who has heard of the project before (excluding our game group). It's a project which should have more listeners, but for some reason it seems to have stayed really out of the spotlight.

Well, I collect strange ambient/electronica/choral stuff like Wim Mertens (Belly of an Architect), Philip Glass (Einstein on the Beach), Michael Nyman (Prospero's Books), Jeff Johnson (A Fiery Mountain), Scanner (for cyberpunk games) and Biosphere (for the creepy underground stuff). Shinjuku Thief is a bit eclectic for most people's tastes; my players couldn't stand it.

I found that the various Myst soundtracks also make excellent fantasy background music.
