I bought the PDF (mostly for the Excel sheet) a while back and have been lovin' it ever since. I use it for pretty much all of my d20 games (D&D, Modern, GT). Determining ELs, XP, etc. It also lets me plan encounters ahead ... how much XP do I want to give out? How hard an encounter do I want? How should I build the foes to match that? I did that for last Sunday's game, where I knew I wanted a long, challenging, but ultimately non-deadly combat with a "Plant Monster" that turned out to be an undead fey (defeated the plant, the fey emerges from it, battle the fey). I was able to plan out my CRs ahead of time and then use the creature creation spreadsheet to build the perfect threat for the CRs I needed.

Shweet.

Wulf,

YOU ROCK!

I already own Grim Tales (a must own for any gamers library). I will be going through this PDF and will leave comments.

Once again.

Cause I misspelled pyrrhic? Say it ain't so.

I love that the spreadsheet can handle ANY mix of creatures. You can't do that with just the info the DMG gives you (unless you like pitting the lives of your PCs against guesstimation).

I am also very gratified that some of you are finally picking up Grim Tales. It's much appreciated.

Wulf

No, 'cuz I misspelled Phy...that word. Damn greeks.

Grim Tales has long been on my "I really have to get that" list....I just kept forgetting to do so. My FLGS had it displayed prominently on the shelf, but has since sold Slave Lords out....so I'll need to ask them to procure said material, as well.

Kudos, sir, Kudos. When I'm done reading it, I'll probably put up a review here on ENWorld.

Short review is this: If d20 Modern had been this well thought-out and easy to read, I might be playing it right now, instead of letting it's pretty pages languish on a shelf.

WooT! My Grim Tales shipped yesterday, according to BAMM, and I'm getting it monday or tuesday.

Also, thank you for the download! I know JUST the GM I need to show this thing to...

That's a shame, I thought learning d20Modern was quick and easy. Makes perfect sense to me. More than Grim Tales did at first glance. What was the hardest part for you? (If you want to not derail the thread you can email a response, I don't mind off thread discussion). :)

Out of curiousity, is there a layout preview anywhere online for Grim Tales? I'm *this* close to ordering it, but none of the online reviews talk about the paper stock or go into much detail about the book's construction.

As a comparison, which edition DnD PHB is it most like? 1st (matte paper, completely black and white), 2nd (nicer paper, some color), or 3rd (full color, really nice paper)?

What can I say, as a DM I like to be a rat bastard *and* stylish.

Thanks, Wulf! I picked this up for my GM.

hmm... Maybe I'll make a few adjustments to the spreadsheet calculations before I give it to him. ;)
