Most Ryan Reynolds stuff is only mediocre to me, including the Deadpool movies. His voice work in Detective Pikachu and The Croods was good. Maybe his horrible version of Green Lantern, and how his voice just did not match that character for me, ruined me liking him in anything live-action. That said, I do want to see Free Guy, once it is on the US version of Disney+. A fact @MarkB neglected to verify, before posting like it was available worldwide and not just in some small country somewhere.

In my defense, us getting a show or movie before our American cousins is such a rare occurrence that I didn't even take it into account.

Watched this on Disney+ last night with the family. Quite enjoyed it.


That said, I did notice that it perpetuates racial stereotypes - the main heroes are white folks, while the POC are their support team and/or the BBEG. I mean, one of them is even named "Buddy".

Now that I think about that...

That actually pretty much sums up a LOT of the Video Gaming world with video games today...

If you EVEN HAVE POC in the video games to begin with.

I'm hard pressed to think of a video game these days that has a POC as the main character that you do not either create at the beginning (so many options available) or is just part of a cast of main characters (like GTAV, where you have two of the three as white men anyways).

That's kind of bothersome if you start thinking about it and going down that rabbit hole...especially if you are a POC I suppose. Makes me think. I'm sure there is a game or two out there, but they are rare now that I think about it.

I mean, there's a few. Like Miles Morales in one of the recent Spider-Man games, or Alyx Vance in Half-Life: Alyx. And, well, a fair number of Japanese games have Japanese protagonists, but I'm not sure if that counts as diversity since it's the local culture.

True, although Alyx started off as the sidekick / potential romantic interest of the white male player character.

Free Guy was like a mix between Matrix, Tron, and The Truman Show. What I liked the most is the main character "Guy" is always positive once he finds his purpose. That's a welcome change from most of today's movies, and from what I understand that change was introduced by Ryan Reynolds. The interaction between Guy and his friend "Buddy" the security guard really makes the movie for me.

I've gone looking for this movie twice on Disney+. Do I gotta have a special kind of subscription or something? Doesn't come up in search to even tell me to give them more money.

Apparently it's not on the US version of Disney+. Not sure why we got it early in the UK.

My niece was recently visiting me in Toronto, from Virginia, and mentioned something about how it was cool that we got all of the Hulu stuff on our Disney+ that they didn't. I read something about it being available on HBO in the US before Disney+. Might have something to do with content consolidation...?
