Unless your store is selling them off :(

That is a load of crap. The whole point of Free RPG Day is to try to save the brick and mortar store. (This is why companies aren't releasing their product for free download --- or, at least, shouldn't. The point is to get people to go into their gaming stores. If everyone can download a copy it makes the promotion worthless.)

Publishers hand all their product off for free (minus shipping and packing, I believe). So every publisher supporting the promotion is essentially losing money*. For brick and mortar stores to turn a promotion designed to benefit them into a cheap shot at some extra sales is lame.

Crooks like that deserve to go out of business.

(*And yes, the "loss" publishers take from giving away free product can be justified under an advertising line item, but you get the idea.)

I thought it was meant to help promote the RPG hobby as a whole, but I don't know anything about how it came about so I'm probably wrong. All I know is that none of the FLGS near me are participating. :(

Paizo will also be releasing a free 3.5 adventure at Free RPG Day, "Revenge of the Kobold King," for folks who still enjoy their gnome bards and multiclassing and stuff. :)

I'm thinking about hitting all three participating game stores in Maryland to try to get everything I want. It's a shame that stores have to restrict how many you can take, since I see it as a chance to try new RPGs that I might want to buy.
