When I was learning to play D&D, money was tight, so I was thankful for a friend who had the books. A lot of people have the same struggles today. The "free" rules are limited, and the core books cost ~$150. That paywall keeps some people from ever fully engaging in the game.
So we created Free5e—a complete, open-source 5e alternative that anyone can download, use, modify, and share. No paywalls. No corporate control. Just the game, fully open and free forever. (Creative Commons Attribution license) It will be available in multiple accessible formats including dyslexia-friendly accessible PDF, ePub, digital braille, audio, markdown, etc.
Built on other CC-BY sources from Sly Flourish, EN Publishing, KibblesTasty, and the WotC SRD, we combined and expanded some of the best 5e content to give everyone the chance to play. Once the books are ready to print, our goal is to make all 3 hardcover books available for roughly the cost of a single WotC core book.

We’re also launching a Kickstarter on March 4 to fund layout, editing, and human-made art that will offer accessories and mementos as backer rewards. (Yes, all the art will also be CC-BY, which will further improve the hobby by offering a large collection of art that other creators can use.)
