Freedom of Action and Grappling

Solomani

First Post
After many levels and much concentration I have managed to attain a decent AC for my paladin/cleric character (34-41 depending on spells and expertise use). This has prompted the GM to start people trying to grapple me after just a round or two.
(Only AC 15-20 against touch attacks). To counter this I am using Freedom of Action to break free of grapples (cast before combat).

The freedom of action spell implies that it stops the character from being impeded by water or spells. I do not have the text to hand at the time of writing but remember that it has a comment something like ....it also stop any penalties from water, or spells such as hold person, paralysis and web.

We've taken this to mean that it also applies to any physical attempt to impede the movement of the character. Currently the GM rules (fairly reasonably) that this means my character can be grappled but on his own turn can then simply move away.

What does anyone think. Is this a fair interpretation? Would this spell prevent someone being tied up? Does it mean you cannot be grappled at all?

Also I am working on making my armour slick. In the rules this applied to any escape artist attempts, since I do not have escape artist I am using it to add to my defence rolls against grapples (since this is also an application of the escape artist skill). Thoughts on this??

Ahem, and as an addition question. The GM in question is now starting to use trip attacks. Any ideas as to how I can counter this?

It think it's a really big stretch of the intent of the spell.

I'd say no.

See previous answer.

Well, seeing as that's not what the enhancement does, I'd say it wasn't applicable to grappling. Grappling is opposed by Strength, not Dex.

The prone attack feat is nice.

Other options

I would rule that a freedom of movement spell does not protect you. If you are going to grease your armor for escape artists, then remember your amour check penalty.

If you DM lets you use freedom of movement you are set, but what other options do you have available?

1. Bulls Strength help your grapple check as do other enhancement type spells.
2. Feat from Sword and Fist - Close Quarters fighting. Allows you to get a AoO on anyone attempting a grapple and then add the damage you do to your grapple roll. I don't have the book in front of me, but that is the gist..
3. I remember reading a feat that gives you a +4 to your grapple check. Not worth it compared to Close Quarter Fighting.

I'm sure there are more

P.S. Never grapple a rouge - Saw someone die from this in Living Greyhawk. Ouch....

You lose your Dex when grappled

That's what I figured you were gonna say. ;) You don't lose your Dex to the one you're grappling. PH, page 138, Grappling Consequences, No Dexterity Bonus.

I gotta wonder about
the DM running that
Living Greyhawk game
though.

feel bad for the player. I didn't catch it either.

You get DMs of all levels of rules knowedge just like in home campaigns. It's a time friendly version of D&D.

moral of the story: dont grapple when there are rogues about. ie: you get in a grapple then the army of rogues sneak attacks you.
