Assuming a Windows box....

Pressing Print Screen will capture the whole screen. You can paste into MS Paint.

Pressing ALT+Print Screen will capture the active window. You can paste into MS Paint.

Heh, the key predates that function (I think that got added in XP) - in dos, it would literally print the text on the screen to your printer.

Nah, Print Screen has worked for screenshots for years - at least since Windows 95/98.

I'd have to put a lot more effort into it, in order to see how long the functionality has been there, but I know, for a fact, that it was in at least one version of the 95 Beta back when I was attending OIT (Oregon Institute of Technology).

Of course, that doesn't qualify as an answer for your question, since Windows isn't freeware...
