Frenzied Beserker...

First Post
Just had our first session of a new Realms game, where we played 10th level characters. one of the guys is playing a Half-orc Frenzied beserker...god lord is he a mincing machine.

I myself was playing a Shifter, and got slapped bigtime (30+ points from a single attack) where I got in the way of his Frenzy whilst I was in Dire-bear form. Thankfully others were around to cast hold on him. Scary indeed.

The frenzied beserker certainly managed to put out some massive damage, about 60 points on a full attack. Hopefully he won't discover power attack for a little whiile longer.

And I might have to have my cleric pick up spell focus / greater spell focus just to help guarentee that we can hold him if we need to...

frenzied NPC

I'm not sure, but last I heard, playing a frienzied bezerker is risking your PC being made a permanent NPC each time he frienzies. You hurt a PC, and you can't pick your targets, and you lose the character.

I don't really like the Frenzied Berserker, it comes a across as a "screw you guys" type class. The Frenzied Berserker becomes more powerful, but at a cost to his companions. They have to be increasingly wary and prepared for when he turns on them and this reduces their effectiveness. I know when I played a spellcaster in a party with one I always kept a spell on tap to get away just from the berserker just in case things went sour. It is a selfish class.

My experiences is that the Frenzied Berzerker is the biggest threat to himself. In most combats that I run, he almost always the only guy to die. Of course this could do with the fact that they don't face 1 fire giant but rather 5 fire giants, 30 gnolls, 4 frost giants and a handful of trolls.

After a while it became a challenge how far I could bring him down to. Lowest was -280 or so though healing spells messed up the count. Of course the joke was the it was just a spine and an Arm of Nyr fighting.

The Frenzied Berzerker is fantastic if the DM is known to run long and dangerous combats but causes massive collateral damage in short mini combat. Add that to the fact you can frenzy if a mosquito bites you and it becomes more trouble than its worse.

There's also the Berserker in Dieities and Demigod. He has Frenzy, but doesn't risk doing so simply because of damage. Prereq's are easier (the FB requires two feats that are kind of silly) but you get cleric BAB.

the Nezumi in my game is a Berserker, but took it for the shapechanging powers.

Berserks from DDG

Berserks from DDG are interesting.

They literally go mad in battle and attack everyone. Which can be even worse than the Frenzied Berserker. At least the Frenzied Berserker attacks the bad guys until all the bad guys are dead.

The Berserk will attack nearest target, even if the nearest target is friendly unless the Berserk passes a will save against DC 15 +1 per round in a rage.

Also, the Berserk from DDG requires 1 standard action to enter his battle fury.

The other advantages the Berserks get are much better than Battle Fury. i.e. +10' additional movement, beast shape, and DR.

This is definitely nonstandard magic, but it shouldn't be too hard to set up some spells/magic items that incapacitate the frenzied berserker were he to attack his party. In a frenzy he would never volunteer to waive his saving throw against say, Hold Person, but before combat he might agree to some contingency-type thing where he fails his save preemptively against a Hold effect.

Just an idea, at any rate.
