Yeah usualy it's not a big deal, but there are occasions where attacking allies can lead to trouble such as when my party's sorcerer critted our avenger dealing more damage than his bloodied value, knocked him prone and pushed him into a room full of monsters.
Or the time when I was playing a wizard and critted MYSELF bringing me 1 hp away from my negative bloodied value and death.

How did you hit yourself? I have not encountered that situation at all. My initial guess is that you targeted an area burst on yourself? Is that right?

Still, kind of unusual.

Depends on the player. A friend of mine plays his Staff wizard almost the opposite way to my approach - he happily picks indiscriminate spells, and will drop them on party members if the effect on enemy targets looks worth it, though he tends to let other know well in advance if he's planning it. His PC has such high defenses that he's not too worried if he happens to be one of those caught in the firing line, and he's ground-zero'd a fireball on himself a couple of times.

actually, you are right, but i would not be so generous as a DM and call that 20 a fumble. Everything is maximized, incoulding the push.

Except that pushes aren't damage and can't be maximised, nor made involuntary...

Nor should players be punished more than rolling a crit on their friend already does. Crit on friend = lots of damage... more than enough punishment given the disparity in hp/damage levels.

Indiscriminate spells ftw.

I've blammed myself (and only myself) with a twist of space, in order to teleport over a force field.
It was teh lolz.

Crit allies a couple of times, and hit them many more besides .. but usually the odds are good.
E.g.
I dropped mass resistance (fire), then when vhoom on the clump of foes surrounding teh fighter.
I only crit on 20s, so it wasn't like I meant to obliterate him.
But even so, the damage I dealt to enemies took one out, and saved 2 actions' worth of attacks for two other enemies to go down ..
So at the end of the encounter, teh fighter wasn't down any extra surges.

Spell Accuracy is the feat that lets you omit your Wis mod in squares from an area or close attack. Epic tier, Wizard only.
