FUDGE Dice shortages (Dresden Files)

I had the good fortune of playing an on the fly game of space pulp FATE with Ryan Macklin, a designer on the Dresden Files RPG last night. I mentioned I needed to pick up a set of FATE/Fudge dice and he also indicated there is apparently some sort of shortage. He also indicated there are new dice coming out, as pointed out by evilhat games higher up in this thread.

An update from Grey Ghost Games.

I've been hearing this a lot lately -- and saying it, too!

Mea culpa -- I let my Fudge dice stock get too low before re-ordering from the manufacturer in China. I thought I'd calculated it correctly: 3 months' worth in stock, 2 months turn-around time for a typical order. But two things that I didn't account for happened: The release of the Dresden RPG with a corresponding leap in demand for Fudge dice (which I /should/ have anticipated, but under-estimated), and delays at the manufacturer's end of things in China.

The good news is -- the dice should arrive in Boston by the end of August. I've got everything set up for a quick turn-around: Fudge Dice clamshell packaging already prepared with card insert and labels, "Welcome to Fudge Dice" inserts rolled and ready for insertion. All I need are the dice and helping hands to put them in the clamshells to ship out to my fulfillment center on their way to distributors, retailers, and consumers.

Even better news: Grey Ghost Games and Evil Hat will be releasing new specialty Fudge dice later this year! Watch for "Olympic Pearlized" Fudge dice in Gold, Silver, and Bronze from Grey Ghost Games, and for "Dresden Dice" from Evil Hat! This is due to a new mold I invested in to expand the color and materials selections for Fudge dice. Expect even more "specialty" Fudge dice in the future!

My sincere apologies to distributors, retailers, and consumers for the interruption in Fudge dice availability at a time where their popularity is increasing!

For those in the Chicago area, right now Games Plus has Fudge dice in stock. We did anticipate the demand for DFRPG. And still had a hard time keeping the books in stock!

No, I didn't notice.

But then I have a cube and a GM pack for myself, and one of my players also has a GM pack.

That being said, there's a pretty nifty method that uses 4d6 (2 each of 2 colors) that produces almost an identical probability curve:

Choose one color as positive and one as negative.

Roll the dice.

Remove all matching dice.

The lowest remaining dice is the result, with a sign corresponding to the color. If there are no dice left the result is 0.

This CAN result in +/- 5, but it's unlikely. You can either take it as is, or treat is as a +/- 4, or 0.
