Full Time Jewelry-Making Position Open, Chatsworth, CA

Mistwell

Crusty Old Meatwad
Hey all. My company, Academic Apparel, manufactures and sells a variety of products such as graduation gowns, choir gowns, judicial robes, honor cords and stoles, and class rings. It's a family company, founded by my grandparents in 1946. We're located in Chatsworth, California (a suburb of Los Angeles).

Our jewelry designer / manufacturer is moving on to an important position at Disney. He's a great guy whose been with us for over a decade, and we will miss him very much. Fortunately, he is willing to come in on weekends to cover what needs to be covered and train someone new, for a while.

So we are looking for a new employee to take over the job, in-house. The position involves class ring design using a variety of programs such as Artcam (a 3D design program), Corel Draw, and Adobe products like Photo Shop and a bit of Illustrator. It also involves some straight in-house art design work, like designing new catalogs, advertising material, a small amount of web site design work, and that sort of thing. But most of the job is working with a new customer on designing their ring, turning a new class ring order into artwork in Corel, transferring the design to ArtCam to make it 3D, running the wax / plastic mold machine to machine that design using a library of existing bezel and side design casts or creating your own using available tools, sending the mold to our metal caster, and then receiving back the ring and doing some finishing/polishing/setting work on it with gemstones and metallic ad-ons like shields.

There is opportunity for growth in the position. We have intentionally not expanded that area for a few years because of a focus on graduation gowns, and recently we've been considering expanding the class rings field, and possibly even growing into related fields like medallions and potentially even large fields like miniatures.

We're looking for someone with an artistic background who is excited about working to grow our existing class ring business. Experience with Artcam is preferred but not necessary, and at a minimum Corel and Adobe products, good eyes, and good mechanical sense. This is both an artistic and mechanical position. The position is for in-house only, which I know eliminates most folks reading this posting, but hopefully there is someone in the Los Angeles area who might be interested. Salary is negotiable depending on experience.

Interested parties please send resume and cover letter to markcronan@academicapparel.com, and mention you heard about the position from EnWorld. I am more inclined to hire someone through here than through CraigsList or Monster.com. And, if you are not interested but might know someone who is, please let them know. We are a great company, with a lot of friendly and good people working here. There is a reason the last guy was here over a decade, and is only reluctantly leaving to run an entire large department at Disney!

I have a +12 Craft (Jewelry) and masterwork jeweler's tools. Does your business accommodate people who are tragically cursed to fight weretigers? Weretigers tend to attack me on a weekly basis, as a result of some prophecy about the end of the world. I don't know. I wasn't paying to scryer before he was eaten by a weretiger.
