Fun ways to almost kill player characters

We once won a HUGE battle in a castle against Fire Giants and Fire Giant Wizards in a 1st/2nd ed game.

The Archmage cast "Polymorph any Object" on the lawn and turned it into green slime.

Then the cleric cast Control Winds and blew the slime all over the place wiping out Gianst as it went...and taking half the castle with it.

We were in for some serious repairs that day...

My PCs ran into a patch of Green Slime in an underground cavern early in their careers. (It ate the dwarf's boots.)

They decided it could be handy stuff, and scraped some into a ceramic container, and have been carrying it around ever since.

About every third session, some situation or other will come up, and someone will suggest "We could use the green slime..."

Example - We could wait until it gets dark, and then put the green slime on part of this wooden palisade, and by the time the sun comes up, the enemy camp should be completely defenceless!

Inevitably, though, someone comes up with another idea, and they don't end up using the slime.

This has been going on for over a year, real-time.

One of these days, they're going to actually open the bottle again, and discover that their little patch of slime died off months and months ago, game-time. I have to be careful not to start smirking every time someone brings it up as a possible plan...
