Further Delay in Setting Search

FireLance

Legend
Yes, it's official:

Because of the large volume of proposals sent in to Wizards of the Coast as part of our search for a new fantasy setting, we will be notifying by the end of August those people who will be asked to go on to the second round of proposals.

We apologize for the continued delay; however, we want to give each proposal fair consideration in our efforts to find the very best possible setting for future roleplaying games, novels, miniatures, and card games.

We'd like to thank in advance the submitters of nearly 11,000 proposals for their enthusiasm and creativity. We were overwhelmed by the quantity of their inspired submissions, and want to do right by them.

Another few weeks of waiting for me...

No surprise; AV and the gang have had a lot of work to do, and we should be sympathetic about the date slippage.

Unfortunately for me, in the unlikely event that my clearly brilliant submission is neither too vanilla nor not vanilla enough (raspberry ripple, perhaps?), I'll be in Poland in the middle of a system implementation when the call comes.... So not the best timing :(

I'm just thinking maybe they should up the number of settings that go onto step 2. If they were going to choose 10 out of 1000, then they should choose 100 out of 11000. It's not going to cost them anything for the second round drafts, after all, and it'll give them a better idea of what the setting is about and the writer's competency without really having to read all 10 pages in depth.

Actually, I think it would cost them...by paying employees for hours and hours of reading. Besides, they have to whittle the semifinalists down to just three finalists. It's much easier to pick three from ten than three from one hundred.

Besides, if they did go with 100, it would be sometime next year before we heard which are the final three. :)

nah, personally when I pick up a sourcebook I can tell whether it's crap in about 1 minute. ;-)

but seriously, I'm not saying they have to do 100, just maybe not stop at 10. if there's a few dozen that interest them, I hope they don't try to whittle it down and instead give the authors a chance to expound(?) on their ideas.

Next up: Delay in contest results until the end of September....after that, they can just give up and cancel the whole thing...I think the master tools team is running this, which would explain a few things...

Sympathetic

Well, I'm certainly sympathetic with the challenge before them, and I'm hoping the give all entries due consideration.

But I'm not too patient, the suspense is killing me!

Ah well, best of luck to all, I suppose I can stop sweating it for a while agian.

I'm thinking my doom if I win will be it is announced just before my wedding so that I only have X weeks one of which is my honeymoon to complete the thing. That would be very very bad!

I also think there should be more than ten. But mostly because I think there's a good chance that someone will either flake and not deliver or have something come up, preventing them from doing a decent job.

However, the WotC team has far exceeded my expectations and hopes on this one already, so I'm not going to do anything other than sing their praises no matter what they decide.

Well, I for one am irritated.

If wizards doesn't like my opinion on this and yanks my proposal, so be it.

I'm just wondering what the heck exactly is going on over there. This is what the rest of the world calls POOR PLANNING boys and girls. How many fantasy proposals were they expecting to get, really? 100? 200? Zulkir/Anthony reads these boards....he saw the drooling fanbase go mad with excitement. They couldn't have prepped a bit better, hired a few more admin, etc?

I'm sorry, but I feel that the continued delays are inexcusable, and I will be extremely surprised if the contest is finished at the end of August.

And I'm going to throw in a little pouting as well (okay, well a lot). It's not fair that they keep putting this off. So if someone gets to the next round and has a month to turn in the 10-pager, I doubt they would be quite so understanding if one of us called up and said "Hey, sorry Tony, but I just want to give the project my full attention and won't be able to finish it for another month."

Yes, I know they are the ones running the Contest (or not a contest, depending on which Rules-Lawyer school you subscribe to). Yes, I know my opinion doesn't count for crap and I should be thankful to have my proposal considered at all.

So what. I am thankful to take part in this contest, but to me it is very poor sportsmanship and business to continuously delay this without so much as a formal announcement. "But it's on the WoTC boards" you say....where? I don't see it linked on the front page.

I do have to give Kudos to Anthony Valterra for answering all the fanboy questions we dealt out to him and trying to keep us updated despite the deluge on his desk. But please tell whoever came up with these deadlines that they need to do a little more job-costing next time before they announce such a brief deadline (for us and for them).

Sour grapes, I know, but I wanted to get that off my chest. Now I'm going to go get naked and drink.
Thank you.
Irys.

I don't think that Admin staff is the problem. They need experienced RPG designers to read through the proposals, and they couldn't really hire those for the project. They have to come from the staff at WotC.

As for noticing on the boards how excited the response was, well, they announced the dates in the documentation that was written before any response started. Sure, they could have changed the dates before submissions closed, but why bother? It's easier to wait and see how many actually materialise first.
