Wow, that's surely not a lot of information there to give you some ideas. :)

How about you write some more about your character, about the personality he has, how he sees various topics, what he does or did, and so on?

Quirk and a strange profession? Okay - he's scared of porpoises and polishes doorknobs for a living (using unseen servant, of course). Hey, you didn't say they needed to make sense ;)

Seriously, as Thanee said, more info would be good.

How about someone who sells information about other people? That's a great job for a diviner; take leadership and have all your minions catalog random facts about everyone they meet. It's a wonderful plot hook for the DM.

maybe not so much a quirk as somthing that gets on people's nerves. I'm not sure what you call that.

see, this is my first time every playing dnd. I'm having a bit of trouble developing a complex character. I'm not exactly extremely creative but i do better if i have a few things to start with. so far my character has been pretty "blah". He needs something interesting.

he's pretty quite and kinda serious (the basic attitude of a wizard). he dislikes brutes because of there ego's and roughness toward smaller creatures. he does enjoy watching people make fools of themselves and likes to help that along whenever possible. but i'm kinda having trouble with the chaotic part of his alignment. I need something that's a little out there, but not quite so far as the phobia of polished doornobs and such.

hope this helps a little

Well, I tend to not like to play with those who create characters to annoy me, and try not to create intentionally annoying characters in kind. But for what it's worth, here is some advice.

1. Choose some kind of physical mannerism. It should be easy for you to remember. For example, you might stroke your chin when you are thinking. Mannerisms can be a nice, subtle way to add texture to your character. People will pick up on the different body language.

2. Here's one that I've liked in the past. It works best if there are others in your group who are sensible. When certain problems come up, look around the table and announce in a strong, confident voice: "The answer is quite simple." Then launch into the most complex and outlandish solution you can think of.

3. Chaos is inspiration. As he's adventuring, perhaps your PC is constantly thinking up new spells, and being inspired by what he sees. So when your party faces the white dragon, you might get an idea for a White Dragon's Breath spell. Or when the party fighter rolls a critical miss, he might get an idea for a spell named Ray of Incompetence. Make sure your PC talks these ideas over with his familiar. :p

Well, I've been playing D&D for almost two years, and I have the same problem. I have an idea, though, that I'm using for one of my characters at the moment- although that character's in an Eberron campaign, and it sorta fits the Eberron theme better (but is usable in any campaign setting).

Make your character a complete and total atheist. Now, don't get me wrong, this doesn't need to interfere with any of your personal beliefs- I'm a devout Christian, as it is- but my character doesn't believe in gods at all. As far as he sees it, magic is just there because it's there, and it's just a tool. It doesn't come from "deities" or "higher powers", it's just there.

Just an idea.

Diviner, eh? Well, with only 3rd level spells at best, I have two suggestions for a profession;

Local Matchmaker.

-or-

Finder of lost items. (via Locate Object)

"Oh, that's Dudley. Bit of an odd fellow. Finds lost items for a living..."

Quirks? Well, if he's using Detect Thoughts on a regular basis, that could make anyone a bit mental. Always being bombarded with the strange thoughts of others and their internal ego-games.

When I think of annoying, all I think is George Costanza from Seinfeld. Make him totally nerotic about people liking him or something, and maybe he just can't hold down a job. Make him whiny.
