D&D 5E (2024) Future of D&D Encounters Program with Chris Tulach!

I've yet to see any AL content outside of conventions, tbh. But Encounters was a major driver of why I loved 4e, I played or DMed it regularly and still have most of that material. I even adapted the Neverwinter module to 5e. I'll watch the video later, but I'm into running/playing Encounters if an LGS decides to go with it

A while ago I’d heard of it being run a lot in NYC stores but like locally here I imagine it’s been a good long while.

The NYC scene in terms of D&D in-store play is basically...

Hex & Co (popular gaming cafe with 3 Manhattan locations) - there is an active D&D scene at all three locations, and standing weekly open table D&D nights at the Upper West Side & Union Square locations. You can also hire pro DMs out of these stores to run one-shots or ongoing campaigns specifically for your groups. My impression is that they just don't see any need for Adventurer's League - players are showing up anyway, and conforming/learning AL rules & content is just one more thing they'd have to ask their DMs to do. I think the rates for players for in-store games start at like $25 per player.

20-Sided Store - Brooklyn gaming store with active in-store TTRPG scene but it's only like 50% D&D, and only like 20% of the D&D is official WotC material. No AL. Typically $16/player/night.

Brooklyn Game Knight - Sundays is $15/player drop-in RPG night. D&D, but no AL.

Gamestoria - Queens. Wednesday night is a $10/player drop-in D&D night. Haven't been there in a while, but wasn't AL last time I went.

Plenty of other gaming stores that sell D&D stuff in the five boroughs, but none others in NYC AFAIK that offer in-store TTRPG play.

In the greater NYC metro area, plenty of stores with a weekly D&D night, typically $10. I certainly haven't been to all of them, but I have been to 6-8 since 2017 and have never seen an AL game at any of them.

Only place I've ever seen AL play is conventions and WotC's Virtual Weekends that Baldman Games runs.

I have yet to visit any store in the greater NYC metro area that is really keyed in to the Adventurer's League program, or whose patrons and players have even really heard of AL or know what it is.
I first seriously got into d&d during the twilight of 4e through D&D next play test, most of the stores running play test games in 2014 we're doing AL through like 2017 but that's ancient history now. We may have been looking at different times.

My FLGS has been calling their D&D nights "adventurers league", but haven't been serious about doing it in accordance with official Adventurer's League format for years. They have just been using it as a label for their D&D nights.

Some questions I have are:
  • Will the FLSG support be rolled out internationally?
  • What is character generation going to be like? I can't image it will be as complicated as AL.
  • Will there be better pre-gens for D&D 2024 rules? They have yet to produce anything like the same 1-10 pre-gens they had for 2014.
Not expecting any answers yet. Not sure if WoTC know yet.
