Gaining a Beast Companion?

I have an elven rogue and I have multi'ed in to shaman and am willing to retrain.

Is there a way, short of a house rule, for someone to gain a beast companion without being a hybrid or full class ranger?

I am looking for a closer connection with a beast that scales, possibly even something like the Ranger's Beast Training for it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You might be able to convince your DM to use the companion rules from DMG 2. There would have to be some plot device to get your animal companion in the party, of course.

As a Shaman you could just refluff your Spirit Companion to an Animal Companion..

I don't think that would work well without changing the mechanics. The spirit companion is designed to be removed and placed somewhere else. It would be better for the GM to allow multi-classing into beast companion ranger and giving their beast the hybrid penalty. I think WotC didn't do this because in that scenaro if we went along the same lines as other multiclass feats, the beast would only get to attack once an encounter (not counting Oppurtunity Attacks.)

Something of note to the discussion, I recently came into a Magebred Destrier @ 3rd level due some good deed and I want a strengthen the bond with it. I will probably take the Mark of Handling at next level too.

I have considered the custom multiclass feat, which would be my preference, but I do not think my DM would be amendable to it. =(

Companion rules in DMG2. I will take a look at it. I will also have to take a look at creating a custom feat. If you guys have any recommendations for either I would appreciate that as well. Could someone post a breakdown of the rules for me.

Thanks all

Beast Companion is just really not something you can nerf down to the value of a feat. Honestly it is worth 2-3 feats at the very least. At least it can REPLACE 2-3 other feats, though none of them are really core feats.

Well, you could always buy/find a mount. The DM could give you a companion, but that is totally out of your hands and will depend on group size.

You have a race that is very compatibile with a hybrid rogue/ranger using a superior crossbow. But if your only 3rd level your going to have to forsake Shaman multiclass for a while. Lvl 1 Hybrid Talent: Beastmaster Ranger Lvl 2: Prof. Superior Xbow
But that is a fullscale overhaul of your pc, which likely will need DM approval as well.
