Gaining Feats?

What about saving other things? Sorcerer known spells for instance? You are not gaining anything by holding onto it except perhaps in special cases like Eldritch Master, finding an "ancient text" describing a new spell, or researching a new spell. Is there an official ruling on this? What about people's opinions?

The difference here is that you can't gain more powerful spells by waiting -- whereas you can gain more powerful feats through banking. You aren't making an end-run around the prerequisites.

I don't think that there is generally a problem with waiting to aquire new spells known. As with any houserule, though, specific cases might cause unforseen problems.

Generally, it's a bad idea to let players wait.

Even with the spell thing it can be abused. What if they leave a slot open until they meet the prereq's for a meta-magic feat and use the slot to learn a meta-magic'ed feat?

I would ask the player why they are waiting, and make them stick to it if you think it is a decent reason. Especially for sorcerers because once they chose all their spells there is no way to change them, and they don't get many to beign with.

Spikey,

That would be an excellent example of two seemingly innocuous houserules becoming more than the sum of their parts. It is precisely why I keep the houserules to an absolute minimum.

But, unlike the houserule to allow "banking" feats, banking spells known will usually require a second house rule in order to make it abusive. Banking feats is abusive on its own merits.

Cheers.

Oops.

I try to keep house rules to a minimun too, but I have felt like Sorcerers could use a boost all along, and I had forgotten that sorcs learning meta magic'ed spells was a house rule.

It is a house rule, isn't it?

Yeah, the rules say you can't bank 'em, but one thing to keep in mind, especially for DMs: If characters, who are advancing one level at a time, can't save a feat, then DMs who are creating pre-leveled baddies need to advance them one level at a time too. I'm willing to bet that MOST don't, which will allow them to have feats "banked" immediately upon creation. If you get what I mean.

Actually, I'd guess many DMs do gain feats fer th' NPC correctly...which is "one level at a time". In other words, each feat is gained because all prereq. (like BAB and other feats) are met.

....Whoa.....this one is old.........

Anal Spikey? Let's not hear that particular adjective in your closing ever again, mmkay SpikeyFreak? Honestly, I know that I speak for many of us here when I say that I appreciate your signature, um, signature, but sometimes you take it a bit far. :]

Jeez, I was eating and everything. Blech!
