Game Concept: SpellJammer + D20 Modern

Argent Silvermage

First Post
Has anyone thought of a cross between D20 Mod and SpellJammer?

The way I see it is that Humanity has been invaded by an alien race. Elves! (or Dwarves, gnomes, Orcs...) They have to battle these magic weilding nasties in order to free earth.

It's just a thought.

Ooo, now you're giving me evil ideas for a game. I've always loved spelljammer, but never though of combining it with a modern setting before.

To add a nice horror element, make the evil invaders Illithids, with legions of enthralled slaves who are elves, dwarves, displacer beasts, doppelgangers, and other nasty fantasy creatures. And of course some mindslaves will break free of the aliens and teach some of us poor humans how to use magic...

Throw in a few illithid motherships with elder brain pools, a generous heaping of people having their brains sucked from their heads, and a few random cattle mutilations for no good reason, and it'll be tons of fun.

You could even crop circles a real magical reason for existing. Perhaps they actually are created by people, but aren't hoaxes. They're magical wards that prevent spelljamming and planes-travelling invaders from coming to earth. With the increase in skepticism, fewer and fewer people created crop circle wards, until finally the Illithid invaders were able to break through. Our Heroes(tm) will of course eventually discover this. "We have to save the world! Quick, create some crop circles!" Naturally that won't repel the invaders who are already here, but if created in the nick of time, they may keep out the even worse monstrosities heeding the siren's song calling them to their newly opened ancient homeland: the Great Old Ones. :D

Michael Tree, Super evil genius. I like the sound of that.

After watching "Dune" again (in a fit of Dune-madness, I watched both the David Lynch version and the SciFi channel mini-series!) I had an idea of using d20 modern for a similar campaign, but instead of the Guild of Navigators, have interstellar travel based on magic (like big, bad, dangerous-to-know "teleport" spells). Kind of a swash-buckling SF with magic.

We'll see how it actually turns out.

Hmm, I like the sound of that too. :D

Another idea I had a little while ago might fit in well here too. Ever since I saw the Kill Bill teaser trailer, I've been enamored of the idea of a modern world where guns don't exist, and people fight each other with swords and martial arts. I don't know if that's what Kill Bill is like, but it sure looks like it.

So, as the aliens are invading, they resease their ultimate weapon against Earth: The Philosopher's Bomb. In a wave of multicolored energy, all chemistry on Earth suddenly distorts, and now doesn't work the way it used to. Gunpowder is now as inert as jeweler's rouge, explosives go pop instead of kaboom. Gasoline and other fuels still work the same, so there are still cars, jets, and molotov cocktails, and electronics are more or less unaffected, so there are still computers and the internet.

I don't know if other people would like this as much as I would though. I'm not terribly fond of guns in games, but I know some people are.

I tell you. I'm a sucky PbP DM but I would love to play in a game like this if anyone has the Stones to work with me on creating the game world.
I've never played in a PbP game, let alone DMed one, but it would be fun to work on the game world once I have some more free time, after my midterm exam and papers.

I had a similar concept where it was basically the spelljammer campaign set in modern times. There was an alliance of worlds consisting mainly of humans, orcs, dwarves, goblins, kobolds, halflings, gnomes, hobgoblins and others against threats like the expansionistic neogi, illithids, beholders, k'rrr, clockwork horrors mark III, and more. It was basically just fantasy worlds with modern technology. And modern day battleships, aircraft carriers, and destroyers with spelljamming helms.
