Game of the Gods

Byronic

First Post
I just thought of a great setting. It's unusual for a DnD setting since it's humorous and bizarre rather then anything else. When reading this, do try to remember that I just thought of this 5 min ago and am making it up as I write this post.

First of all the PC's (hereafter called "Heroes") are both more and less then they are in the usual setting. The Heroes are actually "Gods in the making". Some of them were souls who showed divine potential in life. Others could be dead Gods who wish to resurrect their former glory. Some might even be an artists fancy or a love legend so strong it gained a sentience of its own. But whatever their former origin, each Hero has proven himself worthy to get a chance for Godhood.

It requires altering the basic concepts of the concepts of the game. The Heroic Tier is basically a "secondary school" level, the Paragon an "Bachelor" level while the Epic level is the "Masters" level.

There are different sides to the conflict, three of which are the Gods, the Demons and the Primordials for example (Evil Gods might or might not be there own faction). Each have their own way of doing things. The Gods have (amongst other things) the Academies which replenish their ranks with the worthies. Heroes will have their choice in assignments (quests) in their group projects, the treasure that they find there (gold) is a somewhat of a resource which you can trade in at different places for other goods. On the lower levels the "gold" you get isn't particularly valuable (at least not for the upper classes, you still think it's dandy) but is more a token that you've done your work especially well and shall be rewarded with magical items. By the time you get to Astral Diamonds of course you'll be getting the good stuff which even Gods might want. Of course at any level the "shop keeper" (replace with an appropriate name for where your getting the items) might require certain things done or certain items fetched before he can make your thing since he's fresh out.

Treasure and magical items have a reasonable explanation since Gold, Platinum and such is just as valuable to the other sides while they may give their people their own magical items or they just stole them out of spite. Or who knows, perhaps Bane gave a stash of magical items to the Demon side in exchange for other things. While you might be studying for to be a Paladin or Fighter (slightly different in this setting of course, the Fighter for example might hope to join a War domain later on for example) there is no reason that a student might not step over to a faction on the other side to become a "Lich" or "Death Knight"

There's a lot more that needs to be worked out. Things need to be reinterpreted for example and rethought.

The +(Level/2) Mechanic is explained how you become step closer to your Godhood but also the various classes you're following during "training periods".

Quests need to be rethought. Perhaps the demon of the end of the dungeon is causing a draught on one of the lower planes. The denizens of that lower plane send prayers up to their deity of choice who sent it, who sent it to someone else who sent it to one of your teachers who made it an assignment (explains exactly how those deities solve droughts and such). Rescue missions could be another student or could even be a clutch of (relatively) innocent souls.

But I'm leaving the rest for another time. Any thoughts about it so far? Interesting? Curious? Like it, don't like it?
