Gamer Survey - please respond

benkyo

First Post
Greetings all.

I am currently taking a Statistics class and the final assignment is doing a case study on a chosen topic. We're tasked with developing a survey, gather data, and then running statistical analysis on that data. We must then present our findings to the class.

The topic I chose is Tabletop Role Playing Games. Specifically, how do people get into them, what they play, and why they play them. I love tabletop RPGs; it is my favorite past time.

I have developed a survey that gathers various demographic statistics and then goes into my core questions of how, why, and what do you play. I tried to be as encompassing as possible, so please do not be offended if I excluded answer choices specific to the flavors of tabletop RPGs you enjoy (most of my experience is with D&D and Pathfinder). The survey is completely anonymous; I never ask for your name or email address, and I only see the raw answers to the questions asked.

If you can spare a few minutes, please take the survey, you'll be helping me out with my project.

Thank you in advance.

Took the survey, please share with us your results!
Thank you!

I can definitely share the results.
My presentation is in a few weeks, so I will be gathering data until then (need at least 200 respondents per my professor, so I need more people to take the survey).

Taken. Good luck on your presentation!

(Also, given the thread topic, I'm amused by your choice of username, presuming that it's meant to be the Japanese word I'm thinking of).

It does mean what you think. Been my nickname for almost 17 years now (started as a joke in my Japanese class...and stuck).

Took the survey. :)

I almost skipped this thread because I thought it was someone posting off topic to get help with their probability homework. You may want to change the thread's title to "Gamer survey - please respond" and then explain in your post why you're asking.

Also, by labelling it as Pathfinder related, you may bias the results. "General" would be safer.

A few things I noticed in your survey that you may want to fix:

1. When you ask what games people play, you want to provide a list with the addition of a self-complete "other" option. Coding free text responses for 200 respondents will be a lot of work.

2. You should make it clear when a respondent can give multiple answers. Although the radio buttons vs tick boxes gives a clue, not everyone will pick up on that.

3. You should spell out acronyms/initialisms such as RAW every time you use them.

If you're wondering, I have two advanced degrees that involved survey work and statistical analysis, and have worked professionally in the field of B2B survey research.

Hi,

Took the survey. Was pretty quick and easy.

On the "Campaign" question, do you mean to use "Campaign" in the question? Usually, a campaign spans at least several sessions.

Thx!

Great suggestion on changing the thread title. Might explain why it has had so many views but my survey hasn't.

I did have a list initially, which was very lacking. My second version of the survey had a larger list and an textbox for Other. It was recommended that since I was allowing people to manually enter in their Others, why not let them manually enter in everything. It is definitely more work, but I can manage that.

I agree with #2, didn't think about that. Unfortunately, I cannot edit the survey without first clearing all data, so I have to leave that as is.

You are definitely correct about #3. I will keep that in mind if I make another survey in the future.

Thank you for your participation.
