I was wondering who here on the boards is planning to attend Gen Con and if anyone has attended before could they tell us what to expect. We are planning to attend as exhibitors. Paladinwife

I'll be there.

Will you be able to make bags on the spot? Or custom-mongram them (just with initials) while you're there? If so, you could make quite a mint. Maybe pre-make some generic bags-- monogrammed "DM", "Munchkin", etc.

It seems to me (though I'm just an attendee, not an exhibitor) that the vendor hall is always crowded. There's a lot of impulse buying. I imagine that even if you can't make + sell bags there, you'll get a lot of orders. A few of your very special bags (maybe in a glass case to prevent soilage, theft, etc.) would go a long way to pushing the product.

Free stuff is always good. You could have a drawing for a free bag. Or better yet. Stuff one of your largest dice bag with dice. Have a "Guess the # of dice" contest and the closest entry wins a free royal deluxe (or whatever it's called) dice bag.

If you're working a booth, you probably want to make sure you have a few volunteers to man the booth so you can get out and enjoy the rest of the show. You'll need to spend time trading stuff with other vendors, shopping, exploring the art show, etc. Not to mention, gaming! Of course, you can always game after the exhibit hall is closed for the day.

There is a lot to do, and as an exhibitor I think your time will be precious (since you will be stuck atyour booth for a large portion of the con). Maybe try to do a little of everything, so you can be more knowledgeable about choices in subsequent years.

I will be there. This is my 15th or will it be number 16 for me, never can remember.

What to expect...gamers lots and lots of gamers. Dealer room is loud and traffic is busy up and down the isles. Some booths are passed by but others stop traffic as people look at products or booth models. Speciality items always seem to do ok but don't know sales figures.

We are unsure about the "making bags on the spot" situation...the rules and regs section is very long and somewhat difficult to translate in some sections. While we might be able to make a custom bag on site, we won't be able to monogram on site. The machines are very large and heavy, etc. We will be taking custom orders of course, as that is what we do, and we are hoping to bring approximately 4000 pre-made beauties with us.
The "dice in a bag" idea is absolutely great!!! Any other suggestions? We'll take all we can get. Also, why "munchkin"? -Paladinwife

be careful here, i have no experience with gencon, but at a lot of trade shows, if you run out of product and shut down you can be heavily penalized.

at one of my first trade shows i sold pots like hotcakes, in a thurs-saunday show i was sold out by saturday morning, and they fined me $300 for having to close down, now, if i new sales were gonna be that good i would have brought a u-haul full, but i did not, and it can get you into trouble at these things.

not to mention, a full booth sells better than a half full booth :)

UPDATE

Just heard from the lady at Gen Con, got most of my guestions answered, and I'll be sending in my packet overnight today! I still would like to know what you guys and gals would like to see on our somewhat small booth. It won't be large, but we'd like to make it as exciting as possible and getting a collaborative from the people who attend and run booths there would be great, so tell me what you want to see...Paladinwife :D

The penalty for closing down early is $500, that's why we are bringing 4000 bags, and of course, we can always just take orders if we run out (I'm actually praying for this scenerio) :D And we are going to try to make bags onsite. -Paladinwife
