Gaming Fans Absolutely Blow My Mind - A Rant

Ok, fair enough, nothing new here. Just another Hussar rant. But, good freaking god, it just absolutely blows my mind how petty and small minded gaming fans can be.

Was looking at something unrelated on Breaking News and Opinion on The Huffington Post and news about WOTC and the new announcement of 5e (or whatever it will be called) caught my eye. Huffington post is a pretty widely big place to see D&D news, so, I took a look.

Dungeons & Dragons Remake Looks To Fans For Input

Fluff piece, for sure. But, at least it's news and it's pretty upbeat so, I'm happy. Right? Well, then I make the mistake of reading the last line:

Again, this is not a problem. So, I scroll down to see what people are saying.

4.0 killed the joy that is D&D. wizards cant keep themselves from over-tinke:)ring with a good product.

HOLY CRAP! Are you freaking kidding me? D&D gets a nice mainstream, upbeat news story and people are crapping on editions? Really? What kind of mental process do you have to go through to think that edition war crap belongs in this kind of place. Considering you have posts like the following:

Wizards of the Coast still publishes a book form of AD&D?

See, right there, Cranmer is the kind of people we WANT TO REACH OUT TO! He has no idea that there is still a TTRPG out there and most likely couldn't give two :):):):):) about edition. The community is talking all the time about how gaming is dying, about how we're losing players to video games and how gaming will go the way of model trains - an aging group of hobbyists slowly dying and then fading away.

Yet, when we get a chance to reach out to people, wingnuts like this chump can't keep their mouth shut long enough to get a positive message across.

Do me a favor. STOP HELPING THE HOBBY. If you are doing things like this, YOU, YOU PERSONALLY, are the problem. You are the reason it's hard to find other gamers. You are the one giving the rest of us a bad reputation. For the love all little fishies, PLEASE STOP!

Considering that 'nerdrage' is its own term now, it isnt all that suprising that it only took two post for someone to make a stupid comment.

Not that I disagree with Hussar. Especially when it is stupid nerdrage out in public. Especially since there is no way that anyone can know what the next edition will be like.

You're surprised that people on the internet can't resist making overly negative comments? Open up any youtube video, or a news article on any news website, and just read the comments.

Your mistake is assuming that gaming makes gamers different than other people.

Hell, I submitted the NYTimes article about WotC to Fark around 9-10am. Fark headlines are picked by either mods or voted up by premium users. My positive headline didn't get picked. What got picked was an overly negative and sour headline that night.

I think the second poster there was being sarcastic, or making a joke about how TTRPGs are still being published. But I agree with the sentiment... this petty, loud bickering about editions makes us all look bad.

I can't xp you, it seems I have agreed with you on other issues recently :)

But I agree with you wholeheartedly.

(Edit: After receiving sage advice I have decided to edit the following word that begins with t, rhymes with cats and has a w not a c: )T****. Can I say that word? Sorry if I can't but, honestly, some rpgers are just total ... what I said before. I'll accept any reprimand I receive for that comment. I know I deserve it. But in this case I think it a truthful and fair comment.

I hate it when other people give the hobby I love a bad name. If you're reading this, and this is what you do ... please stop it. It's a game. Don't take things so personally. Edition is not a crusade. It's not a war. The injuries you have sustained are all inside your head. I don't hate you. I hate the fighting ... over preferences. Preferences are okay. Your preferences are okay. But so are mine. So stop spreading all the venom.

They have swallowed pride and announced their goal is to create a system for D&D that aims to bring the fractured D&D community back together. A lofty goal, but how can you spit venom at the sentiment behind it?

Count me coloured sick of the hating (including me hating the hating) as of a long time ago.

What surprises me is that people assume this is limited to the internet.

There is a reason I don't watch TV or listen to talk radio anymore.
