Gaming group ponderance - draw attention to an expert's inexpertise?

You see, this is why we need a bar exam for rules lawyers.

w00t. I'd prefer a smackdown challenge, though. Powered by Jolt, the conflicting rules lawyers go at it all night, until one collapses, or forgets that Targeted Dispels get a roll for every spell, and Area Dispels are roll till ya win.

Oh, and I retract most of my suggestions in my previous post. Bret's way is much more of what I was *trying* to say. Mornings suck, as do I. :p

There is.

New idea: no-holds-barred head-to-head taking of the RPGA Herald-Level GM test.

Winner take all.

Daniel

:D

So where do we turn in corrections to the test?

Question: How is basic Armor Class (AC) determined?
Correct Answer: d. 10 + armor bonus + shield bonus + Dexterity modifier + size modifier
Source: Player's Handbook page 119.

---

Sorry, but there is no named bonus type "shield bonus". The Armor bonus (which is a valid named type) includes the bonus for both the armor and the shield.

None of the answers given were 100% correct. I had chosen:
c. 10 + armor bonus + Dexterity modifier + size modifier + racial modifiers

If you consider Natural Armor (which is a different type of armor bonus than others) a racial modifier, then this answer is more correct than the one they gave.

So who does check these questions for correctness?

Well, that's true, but that *is* how they put it on that page in the PHB. They list "Shield bonus" as a sort of type of Armor bonus, It seems.

Plus they say "base armor class". Natural armor bonuses are covered later. All in all, though, it IS a silly question. There's no real game mechanic for "base armor class", so they shouldn't even have that type of question in there. Too misleading.

A pox upon this thread for showing me that link. I must now obsess and retest until I win! :)

This is bad for my compulsive behavior. Thanks for the link though!

I don't think I understand. Is your DM entirely incompetent? Does he/she take everything that "Bob" says for granted?

If that's the case, I think you have bigger problems than just Bob horribly skewing the rules...

In any case, I think it's discussion time for the group - ask the DM why you are meandering so far from the core rules, and if that's what everyone wants, that you all get the "house rules" in writing. (If anyone asks what's being changed, I suggest you keep you PHB handy and show them examples of what you guys are using, and what the correct rulings are, according to the PHB.)

(I sincerely apologize if I missed something and I'm way off base from what the real problem is.)
