To add to that, though, I'd suggest checking out the discography of Kronos Quartet. They're a modern chamber music group that does killer renditions of lesser known classical music, modern neoclassical, tangos, avant garde pieces and so forth.

I thought of Schoenberg's "Five Pieces for Orchestra" when I saw the thread title.

For what it's worth, Arvo Part is very accessible and not at all avant-garde, if those words scare you.
