Gaming with SKYPE on line

I know many of you don't need to game on line because you have plenty of face to face opportunities going on.

Those of you who don't should give it a try. Everyone, I mean everyone, who I have gamed with online using SKYPE (often with game table for mapping) has said its really fun and nearly as good as face to face without actually being face to face.

Plus, like tonight, I got to play with a guy from Argentina who I had been exchanging "board chat" and some PM's with for years, and we finally got to game together, hear each other talk, and it was just extremely cool, plus the game itself was fun.

If your looking for more gaming fun, give it a go online with SKYPE, or Ventrilo, Teamspeak, whatever voice program you can find for free to use.

It is so worth it!

Another cool thing about tonight, the DM just posted "Hey! I want to run a game tonight!" Within an hour or so we had a game going with 5 players stretching from Canada down to Argentina. How cool is that?!

So on a whim a DM got 6 gamers together from the North to the south of the America's, and we ended up gaming for about 5 or 6 hours. It was great fun!

Quit hesitating! Do it!

I've been thinking about doing this for a long time too. I live in Singapore but my group is in Australia. I go back once a month and normally get a game in... but I miss the regular weekly games. We've talked about using Skype but haven't actually done it yet. Oh well, maybe it's time to "just do it".... ;)

I have been using Fantasy Grounds and Ventrilo for about 2 years now. We have East and West coast US and Canada represented. I can't imagine playing without voice chat but virtual tabletop gaming isn't terrible... but it is slower than face to face tabletop play. I haven't totally figured out why yet, you would think with the aid of the computer it woud go faster.

I'm glad it worked out, Treebore. The video interaction seems like a great bonus. You could view dice rolls, look at maps, see how the DM has arranged bad guys on a battle mat, etc. I'll have to give it a go.

I think it is a great idea, provided that the downtime of last week doesn't reassert itself mid-campaign. My office was effectively crippled in regard to tech support (we do overseas support via Skype). For this reason alone, I think I may stick to things like OpenRPG (which, to my knowledge, has never experienced that kind of downtime).

I tried OPenRPG when I first started but could never figure out how to upload my maps to the program in the size file it seemed to demand.

Ah. Yeah, if your maps are extremely high resolution or in a low-compression format, that's an issue.
