For the most part, I enjoyed it. It reminded me a lot of the original Temple of Elemental Evil, in that we had various factions with their own agendas.

Only two things irritated me about it. The first being the fact that there wasn't a "ending summary"...the scenario was introduced very well, but no details were given on how to handle the ultimate results of the adventure, or any guides to awarding end of adventure XP, future scenario hooks, or the like. (So we got the @*#@(# staff, now what?!)

Secondly--spells in 3e are not REVERSABLE, so some of the new spells referenced don't make sense--even the spells descriptions are vague. If you were going to do an "optional variant" it should have been detailed.

I think if you can adapt to 3e concepts a bit more (might want to indicate encounter levels as found in the WoTC 3e modules), and improve a little more of the module background details, you'll have a nice future.

I am pleased that you found Gaxmoor enjoyable overall! There is not really an ending summary or hook into a sequel- although I do have that contingent planned for. In a campaign setting meant to be adaptable to many different worlds, I think it folly to funnel the party toward a particular end. I appreciate an more open-ended approach when I run a module. That way I can adapt it to my needs. Th esequel to Gaxmoor will include all the info needed to bring back the veteran groups and to recruit fresh adventurers to Gaxmoor.

The reversible spells that you mention were not my contribution to the campaign setting, so I can't give you any incite on the matter.

Any future work that I do will be in a better format. I was teaching myself the rules as I wrote Gaxmoor and I made some simple and obvious errors in places. Hopefully these are not too damning of the campaign setting as a whole. Thank you for taking the time to offer up your critique.

Why ain't you ever that polite to me, Luke?

Heh, and Luke is working on the underground places of GAXMOOR, but he won't so much as give me a peek at his efforts. Bah!

As for TRT, well, we all know he's a worse curmudgeon that MythusMage....or me :D

Actually, I wasn't really asking to be "funneled", but rather a summary of possible outcomes, their consequences, and any end-of-adventure awards (if you choose to use XP that way), along with a brief note of expansion ideas. There are three major outcomes--the staff is returned to its spot and Gaxmoor goes off into the parallel dimension, the staff is given to the govenor, or to the local existing neighboring governments, or the staff is pocketed by the players.

This doesn't prevent adaption to ones own campaign, but it is helpful to bring a sense of ending to the DM looking to adapt the adventure. I was more or less thinking of the way Gary handled the end of Necropolis--which is hopefully more-or-less intact in the Necromancer Games revision of it.

Epic Battles?

Thanks everyone for all the input. I guess I am also a little curious as to how some of these big brawls turned out in the outer city areas- Grond/ Panchmo/ Harrg etc. Anyone have some good stories from their campaign? Any really novel ways the PCs dodged a trap or ugly situation? It is amazing some of the tricks players come up with that as a writer you never envisioned.....

I can relate a really novel fudging tale about an LM who had a band of orcs pack up and flee when a PC named Tempros Ganger worked out a way to attack and slaughter the lot of those evil swine...

;p
