Anyone else going to be picking this up? I'm looking forward to it. Should be in stores Tuesday.

Definitely. Been waiting for this since Microsoft announced the Xbox 360 at E3 '05. Its trailer at that press conference had a Galadriel-ish voiceover that's always stuck with me.

Also a really important title for the tech side of things. If that game can fit on one DVD, I can't see any problems with the 360 lacking a Bluray/HD-DVD optical drive.

You already have word on how long it is?

Actually though, wouldn't the sequel be a more important indicator of that? Generally speaking, sequels are longer and bigger. And a game released within a year of the system's launch probably won't come close to maxing out the system, either.

We've been hearing the standard "10 hours" from developers. But more importantly, CliffyB posted that the game was up to 24gigs several months back. The idea of a 3 disc game had me pretty concerned for the 360's future. If they can compress that down with such a good looking game, those fears no longer exist for me.

I'd be perfectly happy if games looked as good as Gears and continually came out for the 360's lifespan. In the larger picture, the title's proximity to the PS3 release is directly showcasing the system against Sony's claim of more space being necessary this generation. It needs to prove that DVD-9s are still fine for games. I'm not totally sold on that point yet. Oblivion was amazing and only five gigs, but it also reused a lot of content during the game. GoW should be a good measuring stick for the future.

Oh, so it is quite short.

Looks like more space is needed. But in any case, I agree with trancejeremy - a sequel is a better indicator of space requirements.

It's not short by current standards. 10 hours is a typical game length for something that isn't an RPG.

PS3 might change that, as developers could theoretically fill up the disc with a lot more content. I have my doubts about that happening since it already costs a lot more to make a next-gen title to begin with, and it's not like we were seeing excessively long games last generation when it was cheaper, but I suppose it's possible.

10 hours is certainly not typical for non-RPGs. That is a bit short, even if it may be the norm for some recent FPS games. What are you comparing it to? Let's go with similar games for arguement's sake:

Halo: 15+ hours
GRAW: 10 hours
PDZ: 12 hours

That's just the FPS games. If you start adding in games like Resident Evil 4 (25+ hrs) and Metroid Prime (20+) that are comparable, just w/o multiplayer then things get murkier. Throw in a game like God of War (15+) and that 10 hours looks even worse.

That said, I would imagine that the multlplayer will make a difference for lots of people so the single-player campaign won't need to be that long.

As the years go by, expect to see a considerable amount more on high-capacity discs. PS3 just happens to be the only player in that market for consoles right now.
