Geas limitations

Ok having started a guy using mostly enchantments I was wondering about Geas and how powerful a compulsion it puts on its target. Since there is no saving throw it seems rather powerful. Does the target have to immediately start doing what you told it to do? Lesser geas says that if the target is "Prevented" from do the assigned task the negative penalties are incurred, leaving me to believe that the control is immediate and near total regarding the completion of the assigned task.

Some would interpret that the compulsion is something they can put off for awhile, meaning that in combat its usefulness is limited. That the target has free will, just a punishment hanging over his head if he does not try to complete the task.
