GEN CON being sold?

As much as I'd love for Gen Con to come back to Wisconsin, Milwaukee never really liked the Con. When I go to Indy (which does have an odor problem, but Milwaukee is BEER TOWN, so it's a wash) the businesses that I've spoken with are excited about the con and really go out of their way to be welcoming.

In Milwaukee, the town seemed to active dislike having us there. I never understood it, as gamers tend to spend a lot of money while we're at a Con.

So I guess I hope it stays in Indy ... unless there's another place out there that would actually want us there.

I'm sold! The girlfriend went to Minnesota, and took me up there for a couple of concerts. There are a lot of great gamer friendly places. Sadly, it likely won't happen.

My big fear is that there will be a major change in gencon and how its run. If any one gaming company buys it, we may see less of other types of gaming. My biggest fear is another winterfantasy.

I'd prefer GenCon to remain independent of any gaming company, otherwise I worry about it becoming a house organ of whichever one has it. If WotC bought it, I'd have the same worry a bit more, however I don't think it's them making the purchase. I want a gaming convention including D&D, not a D&D convention owned part and parcel by the makers of 4e that also can have others showing up but only through the side door. A bit harsh maybe, but yeah I'd rather have GenCon rather than Winter Fantasy mk2.

For starters, in the current economic climate, I really can't see them being able to justify the expenditure to Hasbro, especially in light of the delays in DDI, and the failure of Gleemax. But then again, Scott Rouse's statements about the sale were such that I could easily read into them that WotC is indeed buying it back. But would that equate to corporate then assuming WotC was foolish or shortsighted to sell it off to Atkinson in the first place? Not sure.

Biggest name in gaming from KY that I can think of is Larry Elmore.

(Which would probably also include Ken Whitman.)

Beat me to it. I know Elmore does well, but I didn't think that well.

Hey, if the attorney involved in the group buying GenCon is from KY, I wonder if this means GenCon will move to Louisville after any contracts with Indianapolis expire.

I could actually commute to GenCon and spend all that room money on "Stuff"!

I hope not. Louisville has a couple of problems. Its downtown doesn't have a large enough convention center but has the hotel rooms. The big convention center is south of town but doesn't have eough hotel rooms close by (and none really close).

You still have a couple of years in Indy. The contracts are already signed for the next two at least.

I don't think it's wotc, nor paizo, or for that matter any company out on the west coast. The kentucky both companies have lawyers of their own or on retainer in Seattle. But 3 million dollars for an incredibly well off business person is nothing. I"m sure there are a dozen gameing (any type) that have that much liquid to make this type of a deal.
