I agree that the name GenCon should be preserved to represent the largest game convention in the US, and that it should stay as close to it's "home" in the Midwest as is feasable. If they want another con in Cali, then they should give it a different name and let it stand on whatever reputation they grow for themselves. It might even outshine GenCon someday, but it won't happen anytime soon!
Coming back to the same place was one of the charms of GenCon, but it was becoming painfully obvious that Milwaukee wasn't able to handle the requirements of lodging. Chicago would have made a lot more sense as a host city, but Indy was probably a lot cheaper.
Obviously, they want to capitalize on the name GenCon and make some bucks off of it. Seems like everything in America is for sale these days. People who want conventions on the east or west coast already have them somewhere in their region, and they should work on adding sponsors and advertising to grow their conventions--word of mouth always helps too.
