D&D 4E Gencon and 4E

We don't need no stinkin' 4E

We don't need no new core books

No more darn complex rules to learn

WotC, leave the rules alone.

Hey, WotC! Leave the rules alone!

All in all it's just a-nother brick in the wall.

Welcome to the boards, Eva of Sirrion. I think your take on "The Wall" sums up how many people would fell about a release of 4th edition just a few years from now. Mind you, I think that one thing WotC might want to do is to have an annual survey of players to get some idea of the shape of the RPG market and their customers. At EN World, maybe we can do an informal discussion of what is good in the D20 market in terms of settings, rules and supplements. I like to think that WotC does pay close attention to their customer base. As such, I think that 4E will not be out for a while. However, WotC can always get some information from their customers to help ensure that they gain a good understanding of their market and what people are doing in their own games.

In a suprising move, WotC is going to release 4E first at a little convention in Nome Alaska . :D

Yes, and the official setting will include an area with a "Western" frontier feel. I think it will be called "Gnome on the Range."

Not Funny! :p

I with the '3.5 works fine and lasts a long time' crowd.

They would be foolish to do it so soon. They should wait atleast 5 more years to see the true impact of Ebberon and look at all of the innovative 3rd party stuff out there. :)

Not everyone is opposed to 4E. I hope they announce this Gen Con that it will be out in 2006. I would like to start buying D&D books again after sitting out 3.5 as long as I have.

Fourth Edition is obviously a tool of the Illuminati to prepare the masses for the coming New World Order. Bills have already been passed in congress that would let FEMA suspend 3.5E, declare martial law, and install a shadow government that would make everyone play 4E!

We're just a natural disaster away from a new edition...and a neo-fasco-communist dictatorship! Watch out for those government weather machines (like the HAARP in Alaska)...the only reason we're not experiencing the floods and super-hurricanes is because they're not READY yet. They're coming! 4E is coming!

The Bilderbergers, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Trilateral Commission already have their copies of 4E! Rogue CIA units are already running playtests in conjunction with the Mafia...

...and that's why JFK had to die. He was going to expose them! After all...he was getting ready to reveal that 4E crashed in Roswell in the '40's! The Military-Industrial-Game complex couldn't let that secret get out!

MK-Ultra was a brainwashing program to make sure that we'd have 4E DM's when the time was right!

Wake up people! The conspiracy is all around us!

The truth is out there .... WAY OUT THERE! As for Gnome on the Range, I understand it will include a gnomish cooking book or is it a book on cooking gnomes?

Brown Jenkin, I doubt that they will announce a new edition as they released 3.5 only a few years ago. Also, creating a new edition would be major work, and this would likely impact on the WotC production schedule. So, I see no real evidence for a new edition. You might want to try 3.5 as I think it will be here for a while. (As WotC seems to understand their market, I think they suspect that announcing a new edition in the next few years would go over about as well as most PCs being invited to an illithid lair for dinner.)

The schedule for a 2006 release would be the same as for the 3.5 release so it is not unbelievable that they could do this. As for whether they will or not, I never claimed I had evidence, I merely expressed my desire for it to happen. My statement was to point out that there are people who would like to see 4E sooner rather than later.

As for trying 3.5, I have and I did not like it. I thought that they fixed the wrong things and broke other things that I liked. 3.0 works fine for me but it has been 5 years under the rule set, 6 in 2006 and I am ready for a change (just not 3.5).

I couldn't see a 4e coming out anytime soon considering the timeline of the last editions. If I"m currect, the first eddtion came ni 1978 and it wasn't until 2000 until third edition. Which means that this edition should at least last 10 to 15 years before a revision is needed, putting it at somewhere around 2010 to 2015. I don't think the release of 4e will correspond with any special anniversary of gencon. .

Hmmm....I think this is only half true

IT could and has been argued that the game did not have just 4 editions, but rather 7 (Old DND, Basic DND, 1e, 2e, 2.5e (skills and powers type options, 3.0e, and 3.5e).

Needless to say, I support a new edition about every 4-7 years - if for no other reason than to keep the RPG printing division at WOTC (HASBRO) financially healthy and innovative.

Thanks,

Taren Nighteyes

Let me be the first to say that 4E is broken and I don't like it. I'll continue playing my homebrew version of D&D which includes an opposed skill resolution system that incorporates equal parts rock/scissors/paper, pencil break and shuffleboard.
