GenCon Events

I bought the four day passes for my girlfriend and I, planning on being there Thursday morning. I went last year but never got into any events. How do you know if they are going to be good or not. I understand if there happens to be a big name next to the event, but how do you know how good the GM is going to be. Do you only sign up for company sponsored events? I would think not, but I would like some advice on signing up. Thanks
