The real question now is can they actually deliver if, for example, key sponsors, partners, and exhibitors pull out based on the negative publicity generated by current events.

That would be very hard for a lot of exhibitors to do since many of us have already paid for our '08 booths and that fee is non refundable.

I hope you get what you paid for... I would hate to see a slew of vendors losing their $$ if the bankruptcy and legal issues force GenCon to shut down prior to the event.

Please don't get me wrong. I really hope (for the sake of the industry in general) that things turn out for the best. But.. Make-a-Wish foundation is really top-notch, and them losing out in the process really does not sit well with me.

Yeah, unfortunately, most gamers simply won't care if they are supporting a company that shafted an amazing charity and then used a legal wiggle to get out of being held responsible*. They have a service people want and people will buy that service.
More to the point: most gamers who are going already bought their non-refundable tickets, so not going is only shafting the innocent exhibitors, restaurants, and hotels of revenue. As someone who is likely to play a grand total of 0 official games, I feel no guilt for going and having a great time.

Well, my wife is not a lawyer. But I am a lawyer; moreover, I am in the business of making and marketing games as well.

That's cool, Steel_Wind! What games do you make and market?

I don't think you have to worry about GenCon this summer. A lot of companies have pumped a lot of money into this particular one, especially WotC, it being the first major convention after the release of 4E. As for the quality of events at the con, aren't most of those events sponsored by third parties and not GenCon LLC? (I don't know, just asking)

Now that being said, I wouldn't be making any plans for another GenCon Europe, GenCon Australia, or Star Wars Experience.

Does anyone have the numbers on how much money GenCon (not the show in Indy, but the company) makes? Or what Adkison's net worth is? (Not that his wealth should be so intimately connected to the show, but, of course...)

I'm curious what kind of numbers we're talking about, and why they'd have to file Chapter 11. I mean, wouldn't the business have to be in pretty bad shape to have to file?

The comment was, I believe, about not continuing to support the company. If you have non refundable tickets, your support has been given for the year.
