GenCon Indy......A question.....

Ok, I'm going to GenCon this year, for the first time EVAR. However, It was a kinda spur of the moment thing, and we only made our reservations recently.

I checked the gaming events, and looks like everything I wanna play is full. I guy I met said not to worry, since many people don't show up at the table and you can just jump right in if you have a generic ticket.

My question : is it true? To all you GenCon vets, is this method feasible or is it a massive headache that could basically ruin my trip?

Enlighten me! :)

Sounds like fairly reasonable advice. Not every game has missing players, but it's common enough that you should get to play *something* that you thought you'd miss out on.

All in all, though, I have a lot of fun just meeting new people and playing in pickup games. Playing in some early scheduled games is a good way to meet people whose playing style and personality jibe with your own, and my advice would be to try to stick with them...invite them to lunch, put together a game in the evening....the weekend will soon blow by and you'll be looking forward to next year when you can see your new friends again.

There are also generally games that don't get listed until too late, or unofficial games that get posted on the bullettin boards (at least, there have been for the past few years).

If nothing else comes up, try something new -- I've played some stinkers that way, but I've also gotten into some really great games.

Be sure that the game you are looking for does not have alternate slots/days, just because Thursday is full does not mean it is not a game on Saturday. :)

Basicly it is true IF there is space. Holders of tickets have a seat in a game, generics can only get in if the game is not full. Most games I have been in this has not been an issue BUT there have been a couple of games were there have been more than one holder of a generic and no more seats.

My first GenCon was on the moment and I had a great time with generic, demos and seminars. There is a lot to see and do and the generics gave me flexability to take time and see what was going on.

how many generics is appropaite to purhchase? And generics can be bought at the con right?

I normally pick up 10, if you need more you can pick more up. The other good thing about them is if you have any left over you can cash them in! Which has made sure I had gas money on the trip home. :)

Be sure to keep Friday night open for the ENnies Awards and any little get togethers that might be held afterwards... :)

Say Mark, I read the pick-up game thread with great interest. I figure as we near game time the schedules will solidify a bit, but when do you think would be the best time to show up at the open gaming tables? Late Thursday and Friday?

what exactly were you planning on running? D&D?
