GenConsternation: A Rant

Getting columnists to write articles for this site is a great idea. I think long term it will really increase the hits to the site, and its reputation as well.

Agreed. While the news is fun and the messageboards are great, ENWorld has lacked premium (not pay) content. This is a great addition.

I'd like you to hyperlink the footnotes to the footnote markers. I wanted to jump directly down and back without scrolling and remembering which one I was on.

If you can figure out how to do that within a vBulletin post, we'll gladly do so! But as far as we know, it's not technically possible with this software.

That was a great first column. I’ve been to Gen Con a couple times and I completely agree with the last point. I would almost rather walk back to my hotel room and skip the restroom in the Convention Center!

You'd need to add a custom BB Code tag to process the HTML <a name> tag. That's the HTML tag that lets you link to a specific place in a document rather than just to the document itself.

Documentation on the <a name> tag is here and documentation on adding custom BB Code tags is here.

Once you had the name tag, it'd still be a pain to use, because you'd need to apply the name tag to the footnotes in the text and in the list at the bottom, and add links back and forth between them. With 16 footnotes, that's 32 name tags and 32 links.

Agreed. My $0.02: Making one column a "guest column" would be really nice, providing diverse viewpoints, etc.; but then you actually have to find someone to write something...every month!

Edit: Having run colloquia in academia, I know how much of a pain in the a$$ it can be to find speakers (read: guest columnists), but you'd be surprised at how eager some people are to talk given a forum in which to speak.

Hey, guys. I'm glad you enjoyed the column. :)

I realize the footnotes are a pain in the ass, and I hear ya. I don't know if my next column will have footnotes--they're not all going to be quite as sarcastic/snarky as this one ;)--but I think from now on, if I do have foot notes, I'll put them after the paragraph in which they appear, rather than all at the end.

That sound like a better bet?

Or, if you have them at the end again, make sure at least one of them has absolutely *nothing* to do with what it is footnoted from - or with anything else in the column - just to see if people are reading. :)

I can't wait to write it! But the _next_ column, wherein I delve into my insane collection of D&D bric-a-brac to show off some never-before seen D&D products from the 80s? That one is going to blow people's minds. :)

i still have 2 packets of gummy monsters from around 1983. ;)

I'm surprised that the hotel/convention center that GenCon was run at did not have auto-flush toilets. Those things seem to be pretty standard anywhere but gas stations these days. They usually cut down on the 'no one flushes' thing unless the machine is broke or the sensor didn't go off.
