GenConUK to GenConEurope?

I have a feeling that another convention, say Dragonmeet, may take over the big Con of the year slot in London. But if there were good travel packages available, I would consider going to a Con in another country.

Hello Tallarn! ;)

I had the same thought re. Dragonmeet. Most Britons won't bother to go to GenCon if it's not in the UK. They'll go to other UK cons such as Dragonmeet instead.

AFAIK Dragonmeet is profitable, which suggests that London cons are viable in principle. If GenCon UK makes a loss, that's probably because it's mismanaged.

Personally, I might go to GenCon in Amsterdam, but only because a friend of mine lives nearby. Otherwise, I wouldn't go.

I think that this would be a good idea, especially if it is in the euro zone. No special paper required, and no money change.

Of course, I agree with him.
Maybe they will lose UK gamers, but they will gain European (well, continental ;)) gamers.

The amount is cost me to travell to London and stay over, will probably make is cheaper if it is in Amsterdam.

I will never understand why it moved to London in the first place it's just too damn expensive. I liked it in Loughboro (well it's just down the road) but then it was still ok in Manchester

Personally I haven't been to one since they left loughborough, but I would go again if it was in amsterdam.

On the other hand, for me the best location was camber sands. the five hour drive was a pain, but accomodation and large central area made up for it.

Amsterdam huh? I don't know... I *might* go. :D

Anyway, being an Anglophile I go to England so often that going there for a Gencon was simply overkill (I am a student as well, and the UK is expensive...).

What happened to Gencon Benelux anyway...? I stopped tracking it when I quit playing Magic...

Hi

Dane living in Scotland right now. I for one think the UK is by far the best place to hold the GenConEurope, if that be the case.

All European countries have easy connections (flights) to the London/UK area ... much more so than most other places in Europe.

All staff/officials would be English speaking, so why not remain in an English speaking country anyway.

Hasbro/WotC prob. has their biggest European market in the UK; most resellers, most customers, most RPG companies.

Just rename it and make some deals with airlines and stuff like that. Flights into the UK are dirt cheap (not trying to endorse anything here, but check out Go, Ryanair, EasyJet and now even British Airways has cheap flights, trying to compete with the barebone operators).

You can't find cheap flights if they move it to France or Germany. Sure you could drive, but come on! Most people at the GenCon would be in the car-less age (or income bracket, what do I know), so I fail to see how that provides any reason for the move.

Regards
Toft

Unless your British. What annoys me is there already was a GenCon event on mainland Europe anyway. So basically all they are doing is cancelling GenCon UK as far as I can see.

Could someone post information on other UK Conventions which would make a suitable replacement.

You could always join the Euro Zone and forget that Sterling Pound. We would accept you, don't worry :p

Seriously now, I think here there are two opposite views. For UK people, it will be bad. For mainland European it will be good.

The best solution would be doing both a GenCon UK and a GenCon Europe, wouldn't be?

So did GenCon Benelux fold or something?

That was a GenCon on mainland Europe so if that failed I don't see why they think a GenCon Europe would be more successful than a UK event. Unless of course you cancel the UK convention in an attempt to move the UK convention goers.

Aren't we great?

Typical European conversation. It's just like the thread looking for an European ENworld meeting. We were all excited about attending, but everybody wanted it to be near where he lived.
I can understand that people in the UK and especially near London would like tot see the event stay where it is. Maybe the reason why everybody you talked to who was against it was in this case.
An event in the UK is not very accesible for us continentals. On the other hand if it were to be hosted in, say Rome, it would be as big a problem for me as London.(Maybe the Euro could sway me.)
As a continental, I would love to see an GenCon Europe, but I certainly can understand why this wouldn't be the case for some other people.
Maybe the event could alter locations to reach as many gamers as possible.?
