Undead Minion question

I have a question about the Undead Minion variant for wizards. The text says that at first level the minion is completely typical. Looking at the Skeleton enty in the Monster Manual/SRD, I see the typical skeleton is equipped with shield and scimitar. Does that mean that any skeleton summoned in place of a familiar is automatically assumed to have the same equipment? I guess that's a literal reading of the rules. My expectation would have been that the summoning necromancer would need to outfit the undead minion -- natural intrinsic qualities, but not coming with equipment. How do others read this?

I agree with you, orsal. The weapons/armour are not listed as intrinsic (Ex) or (Su) qualities like the Balor's sword, so I would say you have to outfit the skeleton. At least, the claw attacks are okay if you can't afford the sword.

So, "completely typical" except where it isn't? I personally wouldn't see a problem with the minion-calling ritual specifically raising the nearest dead human warrior buried with his arms. The ritual obviously isn't entirely undirected or you might end up with the skeleton of an osteoporotic old lady, or a child, or - to get ridiculous - the hedgehog that died in your back garden last month, but you always get a skeletal human warrior.

I'm not unbiased as to the outcome of this question, so I'll stay out of it :p

Completely typical is clearly a reference to the stats and abilities, as the description then immediately continues to tell you how it changes as the character levels up. That said, a shield and scimitar are not exactly expensive (and considering the thing has a natural attack anyway, the shield, which makes more of a difference, is a pittance). A Wizard who can afford the 100 gold for the ritual can afford the extra amount to pick their skeleton's equipment. Eventually, they can give it magic equipment, etc, if they like.

I don't see equipment being intrinsic or typical to the creature beyond what they tend to wield. Otherwise, all humans would come with longswords.

All elves would be rich at start, they would always have a longbow, a long sword and a studded leather... that's 125 gp over there starting money :p

And over that, I've found my cohort with only his underwear, I had to supply all his equipement. That would not be fair. But I thikn undead could have underwear too ;)

Your cohort should have come with standard starting wealth for the level. If he didn't, then yours was even more nerfed than the 25 point buy.
