General Discussion

I've really decided to play Gnome. I wanna be short. Has that Yoda feel :D

And I was almost depressed when I glanced at my list of prepared spells and saw that I could only prepare 2 Level-1 Spells...then I remembered that you could fill spell slots with lower leveled spells ^^ I'm practically fidgeting with excitement now >.< And gnomes get some nice spells too.

I rather like the idea that this guy is going to be a pacifist, after being abused so much, he'd probably rather not hurt people. Unless he can't help it ^^

THEN THEY MUST BURN щ(゚Д゚щ)

EDIT: I'm Asians, we use emotes. DEAL WITH IT щ(゚Д゚щ)
EDIT: Also, can someone PM/advice me on what items to buy and how I'd go about with weapons? My STR is poopoo, I don't think I'll be make any weapon attacks at all...

That, my friend, is why you always hook up with a Meat Shield. Someone big and armored and carrying a big thing that makes baddies go owie. :D My Ranger is doing the same thing with Ehdge in Treasure Hunt. (oh, so innocent)

Welcome aboard. :)

You can find information about the LPF world here:

Living Pathfinder RPG Wiki

As far as buying gear goes, if you don't have a copy of the book (i have a pdf but usually use the online SRD) you can find the online SRD here:

Probably as a Gnome Wiz, you'll probably want a dagger, maybe an eighthstaff (bad joke on a quarter staff halved for a Gnome).I would assume most of your starting money will go into buying a spellbook, but I haven't run a Wiz here yet (though I have an idea in my head for one someday).

Don't hesitate to post questions here, anyone who is around will do their best to help you. One of the great things about this group. We all work together. :)

I just read it and...*sigh* this is why I try not to read CharOps. You end up throwing your original concept out the window in favor of something better mechanically. Suuure, Elf have a +2 INT but it's boring if every single spellcaster around was an Elf. *facedesk*

There's a difference between optimizing around a character concept and just being a munchkin. Optimization guides are written as "this is the best possible munchkin build you can make." Then you take that advice and apply it to your character concept, and you end up with something fun to play that doesn't suck.

At least, that's how I look at it. I mean, one of my LPF characters is an elf barbarian. Not optimized, but still very effective and a lot of fun to play.

I also played a pacifist gnome wizard for a while. Teleportation specialist. Basically, you go for buff spells (enlarge person, invisibility, haste) and battlefield lockdown spells (grease, web, stinking cloud, obscuring mist). Over the course of her career, I don't think she did a single point of direct damage. (I think she also spoke something like 11 languages at first level -- 3 to start, 4 for Int, 2 from Cosmopolitan feat, 2 from Linguistics/gnome racial).

Gnome is a good choice for those extra cantrips. Not so good for Int but like you've mentioned some choices have to be made to further the concept and not just pure mechanical melee effectiveness.

Interesting idea on the spell slots. I presume preparing cantrips in your first level spell slots will allow you to cast them repeatedly. And with the Arcane Bond item you'd still have access to any one spell your pc knows. If you chose a dagger you could cast with it in hand and threaten if someone did close to melee range.

Buying gear is the worst part of character creation imo. I'd recommend copying the gear list of another wizard like Nevyn and just ignoring the magic and masterwork items since you won't be able to afford them yet.

And welcome to LPF!

Starting at first level as a wizard, I don't think there are a ton of things you need to buy. Your bonded object and spellbook you get for free as class features. You took Eschew Materials, so you don't really need a spell component pouch. You can't cast in armor and can't afford magic items to boost your defense, so nothing to buy there. And with a low STR, you don't want to be carrying a lot, anyway, since if you're too weighed down it's actually harder for you to cast spells.

As others have said, having at least a dagger is probably a good idea; with your school power you can use that at range and apply your INT mod to the attack ala 4e, so that should be more familiar.

That pretty much leaves the basics: A pack to carry your book and few belongings, a few rations, a waterskin, maybe one or two potions of Cure Light Wounds if you can afford it. Possibly some parchment and something to write with. If you're running up against weight restrictions, it might also be worth it to buy a "traveling" spell book, since they weigh a third as much.

Also remember on weight that most of the items are listed at 'full size.' Weapons weigh half as much for small characters, and most gear weighs 1/4 what's normally listed.

What do we know about existing spy networks in E'n? I know there's The Ears of the Whisperer, but are there any established non-evil networks?

I'm beginning to mull on my third character. I'm still interested in a ninja, and I think I've figured out his place in the world. Essentially, part of a kind of benevolent secret society. Where most of the monk orders are pretty straightforward and in the open (as Lawful alignments will tend to be), a ninja order might view ki as a primal force meant to influence the rigid structures of the world from the shadows. Spies and saboteurs when need be, but often merely collecting knowledge and giving folks nudges in the direction they feel benefits the world most.

Wanted to see if there was anything like that already established to graft my concept onto before I started pondering inventing something new. Right now if I go 'new group,' I'm thinking about something from Rhat'matanis, where the rigid caste system would probably mean altruists who don't appreciate the rigors of caste and / or want to make sure the upper castes don't forget the lower ones, would need to work in secret?

Oh my gawd...I didn't get a word of that. (@ spies post)

But really, it appears that for my gear all I have to buy is some form of weapon And even then if a quarterstaff can be my bonded item...I might still want a dagger though, as a sharp stabby alternative

The only armor I'd want is cloth and even that is given for free. My spellbook is a class feat...

I don't think you get to scribe scrolls, which saddens me greatly: I was looking forward to the item creation system.

[sblock=Check List]-Backpack
-Dagger
-Rations and waterskin(s) {you never know, someone might get thirsty}
-The parchment if there's...really any use
-The rest of my money would go to potions, I suppose[/sblock]

Also, arcane bonded item would be masterwork, netting a +1 (which would cancel out my STR penalty I suppose){but it's not clear: STR modifier or STR bonus? STR bonus would mean apply only if equal or more than 1}

Um...um...hmm...nothing else really T^T
