Geography and statistical probability of ENWorld members

Where's Crothian from again? He counts for at least five people. ;)

I once asked Gary Gygax why he thought RPGs started in the midwest - he was not sure, but perhaps the lack of things to do...

TSR - Wisconsin
GDW - Bloomington, IL
Judges Guild - Decatur, IL

Maybe the same is true of RPGers?

They certainly seem more willing to reveal their location.;)

I mean, the population of NY is 8,008,278, and the population of Orange County, CA is (2001 est.) 9,637,494.
The U.S. population on 4/1/2000 was 281,421,906.

The combined populations of LA and NY is 17,645,772. That's a percentage of 6.27%. Is 6.27% of ENWorld from Los Angeles and New York?

Why is the Orange County, CA population relevant? Isn't most of metropolitan LA (and presumably its population) in Los Angeles county?

Just wondering if I missed some reorganization - many years ago I went through the Orange County Sheriff's Academy, and it was quite distinct from its Los Angeles County counterpart . . .

Well, I'm in L.A.

Add to that Fajitas, WisdomLikeSilence, and three other members of our gaming group who have handles. None of us are huge posters though.

WLS started a thread a little while ago about FLGS in the LA area, and got some responses, so there are others.

Plus, there's JonRog and his group.

That animation in your signature makes my browser slow way down and scroll choppily. I'm not sure if anyone else is feeling that effect.

It's not slowing me down, and I love that sig! Cracks me right up.

Anyway, there are tons of gamers from suburbs of cities it seems, although my perceptions could be skewed because of the topics I read.

Given that New York and Los Angeles are the two most populous cities in the country (speaking about the U.S., obviously) one would assume that a good percentage of folks who post on here would be from either city.

This has been said before but let me try putting it some other way...

WotC market research a few years ago suggested something on the order of 3 million gamers in the US. EN World has some 12,500 registered nicks (that's at best 0.4% of the gamer population - in acutality far less, considering international users, and duplicate nicks). And only a small number of those registered nicks are active posters.

Ergo, the active posters cannot be expected to comprise a statistically relevant sample of the gamer population. Even if the gamers were evenly distributed in the population, so that you'd find more gamers where there were more people, you'd expect so small a group as us to show some serious variation from the norms.

In other words - we are weirdos, even among gamers :)

You got that right, Umbran. I'm the only EN Worlder in my entire city (Lubbock, TX), I believe. And we've got some gamers here. Texas Tech University is across the street from my FLGS. There's a community of Texas Tech gamers and their friends there, consisting of about twenty people in their late twenties/early thirties. Aside from that, there's a handful of other gaming communities in Lubbock. That's weird saying for me, since I'm in two of them, and I was going to participate in a third before it died (some DDR/anime/AFI friends of mine decided to try D&D for a while, but they lost their way).

Cheers!

adding to the Midwestern RPG companies: Kenzer is near chicago (KODT is set in Muncie IN) and Chessex is in Ft Wayne, IN.

edit: and Judges Guild was based somewhere near chicago, i think.

Also, somebody once remarked on these boards that there are 5 or 6 of us from West Lafayette, IN. probably due to Purdue. However, I've never met any of them.
