Geomancer, +1 which class?

I have to ask this question, despite the noobish nature of it, because in has never come up until now.

I have a player who wants to play a Geomancer and has met the prereqs, but before I greenlight it, I have to figure out if that "+1 level of existing class" means what I think it means.

In almost every other PrCl, you probably only have 1 spellcaster base class to worry about, but the Geomancer REQUIRES 2- one divine and one arcane.

When a PC gains a level of Geomancer and gets that +1 level of spells, he must choose which class gets the level.

The question is this: is that designation set in stone, or does the player have to choose at each level of Geomancer? That is, can he alternate classes, or take one for a while and then the other, or, once the Geomancer class has been chosen, are ALL of the +1 levels applied to the first choice of class?

My personal instinct is that the player chooses at each level which spellcasting class is benefitted, but I'm not 100% decided.

Your personal instinct is right. The classes that grant +1 spellcasting class to 2 classes are balanced by the fact that they don't have as many snazzy abilities as the geomancer.
The last line : "Since the geomancer had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a geomancer, the player must decide to which class to add each geomancer level for determining spells per day and spells known.

It's an cool and original class, hope he enjoys it.

Yes, it's each choose for each level.

I like the Geomancer, it's definately different. You could make an interesting combo Wizard/Druid/Geomancer/ArcaneHirophant, with a faily decient casting level in both classes, and a wide aray of abilities.

Ok, but is that different from other PrCls? You seem to be implying that it is.

In other words, would a Ftr/Bard/Sorcerer be able to raise both Bard and Sorcerer levels over time while taking 10 Eldritch Knight levels or would he have to choose either Bard or Sorcerer for that benefit exclusive of the other class?

Or are you comparing it to something like the Mystic Theurge where both levels are raised simultaneously, but doesn't have funky powers?

Yes, you can alternate as you see fit. (but only once per level)

Yes, in this case both go up. If you were three classes, you would pick two.

Coolness!

Thanks everyone for the clarification!

Good to know that the English language still works the way I think it does.

Though if a Ftr1/Sor6/EK1 takes a level of Bard and then a second level of Eldritch Knight, only Sorcerer is a valid class to add his EK '+1 level' to. Bard is not an arcane spellcasting class he possessed before becoming an Eldritch Knight.
