And access to the cleric spell list may not mean much spell casting wise just 1st and 2nd level spells, but you can bust out some good stuff with wands and staves, making you a solid backup healer if the primary healer is willing to spend a feat, some xp, and gold. Oh yeah don't forget the two good saves, for an arcane caster actually having a reasonable chance to make fort saves is huge, and also if wearing full plate you don't exactly stand out as the primary target because you are the mage.
