Bah.

What is odd about Wild Cohort is that theoretically I could get a much more powerful Cohort with Leadership once I hit 6th level.

I would guess they pulled down the power level a couple notches precisely because Leadership and a regular Animal Companion might be unpalatable to many DMs.

thanks for the link

is this the only thing that makes it weaker then a normal animal companion or cohort?

"once you reach 7th level, you can choose an animal cohort off the list of animal companions available to a 4th-level druid."

i mean it seems pretty strong for a feat, could you explain to me more why its not, Ridley's Cohort? maybe I'm just missing something in the text.

Huh. I didn't think animals were "compatible" with Leadership. How do you calculate their LA?

(Also, Wild Cohort has no clause about death... your pets are a lot more disposable than your regular Cohort would be.)

IMHO look like very different mechanics. But I haven't though deeply on this, and could probably be persuaded if you have really good arguments. :)

I probably do not not have good arguments.

Seems like we have many similar mechanics when 1 could suffice. Wild Cohort adds another.

I would not call it a weak feat, as having another body can be very useful if you have good teamwork skills.

It is certainly weaker than an Animal Companion, if you simply compare HD.

As for Animals, there are many similar Magical Beasts and the like available as cohorts at middling levels -- Blink Dog, Unicorn, Griffon, Hell Hound, Winter Wolf to name a few. Look for monsters with explicit LAs in the MM, and see page 199 in the DMG.

I really do not see any logical reason that a horse should not qualify as a Cohort. What would its LA be? Approximately zero. Physical stats are nice, but skills are poor and it cannot take class levels. This would be contrary to the RAW though (see DMG page 200).

Wild cohort is not weak if you allow the animal to gain XPs.

Yes. But that does not seem to be in the spirit of the feat as I read it. Looks like it is more of a slightly lighter weight Animal Companion with a similarly locked advancement.
