Getting a bonus feat you already have

I read somewhere that if you are granted a bonus feat that you already have, you are allowed to pick another feat. Can someone tell me if I just dreamed this, or if this rule actually exists, point me to a page number?

Thanks.

There are certain prestige classes that actually specify "If you already have this feat, you may pick up another feat in its place" when granting a bonus feat.

But those are specific to the classes in which they are listed, not a general rule.

This has actually become more the rule than the exception in the prestige classes in the latest WotC supplements. I think it's a very, very small house rule to apply it retroactively.

Which one actually has that rule? The newest WotC book in my hand is Heros of Battle. In it, Combat Medic prestige class gets Mobility as a bonus feat but I cannot fine any mentioning about getting substitution feat and such.

The Warmage has that specific wording on the Sudden Metamagic feats it gets. If you already have the feat you can choose another metamagic feat in its place. I probably wouldn't have a problem with since many players and characters don't plan their character advancement so far ahead that they're going to let their feat choices be determined by a Prestige Class they're only going to enter at level 8 or something.

Ah, thanks. But I could almost swear I read that somewhere. Oh well. Thanks for clearing it up.

You probably read it on this board ;)

I'd have no personal problem in allowing this house rules, especially because I think it is a blatant design mistake to make a prestige class which grants _specific_ feats at high levels, unless they would anyway require about the same level in prerequisites.

Especially when they are feats that a character specialized in that way would likely take anyway.

A little off topic but in the same vein...

Several PrCs in Complete Adventurer give darkvision and state that it stacks with any existing darkvision. There are none that give darkvision that don't stack. Should this be retroactively house ruled?
