Getting my head around the Bard

Well, my Bard has a Str of 9 (was 8, but got a +1 Inherent as a reward. Total waste.) His Dex is 14, so he can Weapon Finesse all he wants and it still isn't going to impress anyone. Wis is 10, Con is 12, Int is 16 and Cha is 21 (+2 item).

He should be using a bow in combat then, when he is force to actually use a weapon. Otherwise, bardic music and spells, and UMD to fire off wands and such!

Geez. I never fail to marvel at the amount of totally abusable jaw dropping stuff WotC printed for 3.5. It's like a freaking candy store, only the candy is all laced with drugs.

I don't see eye to eye with you on much, but if I was playing in a tournament setting, I'd want you on my team.

<Lies down on couch. "Thank you for seeing me, Doctor. I really need your help." >

I'm currently playing a 3.5 Bard, and while it's not the first time I've played one, the first one died pretty quick.

I know, in my head, that the character is not really an offensive spell caster of any real power, nor is he any kind of physical combatant. The class is designed to be general support in combat, and to take the lead only in RP situations.

Yet I keep finding myself tempted to boost his combat power. I almost took Shape Spell as my 6th level feat, even though feats like that are like adding a turbo charger to a moped.

I chose Versatile Performer instead, which I think is a much better fit. Yet still, some part of me wants to be able to blast or chop things down.

Somebody talk me out of that, please?

One thing you could try (that i did with a Favoured Soul caster I played who took nothing but buff spells) is to be the party leader/quarterback. Your job is to make the rest of the party awesome and take a great deal of pride in that. It is also a big responsibility as the party will come to depend heavily on you for all those bonuses and immunities you can give. In my case the rest of the party (the 2 fighters in particular) wouldn't do anything without my input. It was a heckuva lotta fun!! I usually try to play a buttkicking damage monster but this one possibly my favourite pc of all time.

Official item:

Lute-Bow: The upper layer of wood to which the strings are attached can be rotated with a standard action, so that the strings now lie perpendicular to the lute itself. The wood and the strings are treated to offer extra strength and resistance, allowing them to flex like a bow. Although it is held horizontally, like a crossbow, it is a hand-fired weapon, so it resembles a shortbow in usage.

Impromptu Bow [General]
You can shoot arrows with a string instrument.

Prerequisites: Base Attack Bonus +3, 5 ranks of
Perform (any string instrument), Point Blank Shot

Benefits: You can fire arrows or bolts from a string instrument without penalty. Cellos, guitars, harps, mandolins, violas and violins can be used in this manner. Guitars, mandolins, violas and violins have a range increment of 10 ft., and projectiles launched from these instruments inflict 1d4 points of damage. Cellos and harps have a range increment of 20 ft., and projectiles launched from these instruments inflict 1d6 points of damage. A character must use both hands to properly fire the arrow. Unfortunately, because these items were not constructed for combat purposes, a natural “1” on the attack roll automatically destroys the strings, rendering the instrument useless until repaired.

9th level spells, all of virtuoso's songs.

Plus Snowflake Warchanter; stacks with Weapon Finesse.
At lvl 7 I was hitting with +19 with my Satyr Bard.

Hope this helps.

Btw. How does Half-Elf Half-Satyr work?
How does it work? The Half Satyr template was published in Dragon at about the time Savage Species came out. Oddly, the template isn't int he book it was timed to promote.

You get some stat adjustments, a natural weapon attack (head butt), and a few racial skill adjustments, including spot, listen and perform.

So if he's Half-Satyr, what do we do with the other half? :) There's really no reason you can't apply another half-whatever template, is there?

Since I was giving up the stat and feat bonuses of Human, why not go all the way?

The DM ruled that some of the skill bonuses didn't stack, since both halves are fey-ish, but it was still a neat combo. Stat bonus to Charisma, and skill bonuses to Diplomacy and Gather Information, Perform, Spot, Listen and Search. In short, a near-perfect combo for a Bard.

I'm sure there are better, but this one seemed like fun.

Silverhand's Lute

This finely crafted musical instrument also serves as a weapon, as per the Lute Bow.

Used as an instrument, Silverhand's Lute provides the user with a +4 bonus to perform checks involving an instrument and a successful perform check at DC 30 provides the user with a blanket +1 to any bonuses otherwise provided by bardic music which are currently in effect as a result of playing Silverhand's Lute.

Used as a weapon, Silverhand's Lute acts as a +2 Seeking Lute Bow of Force.

Perhaps the most interesting function of Silverhand's Lute is the ability to play it as an instrument and fire arrows from it simultaneously. On a DC 40 perform check, the user can do both without penalty. Failure on this check by 5 or less allows the user to select one of the functions to work properly (i.e., it can function normally as a weapon, but the music is ruined [counts as not being played this round], or it can function normally as an instrument, but the arrows are dropped at the user's feet). Failure on this check by more than 5 means the attempt to perform both functions simultaneously resulted in ruining both (as previously described).

Um, Dandu? Your sample Bard is showing Ruin Delver's Fortune as a spell. It's a 4th level spell, and Bards don't get those until 9th level.

How did you do that? Did I miss something, or am I misreading?

Really? I looked it over and I only have third level spells on that sheet.
