Getting up from prone

If a character is getting up from a prone position, anyone who threatens him gets a free Attack of Opportunity. If this AoO succeeds, does the character still end up standing, or are they knocked back down?

Apologies if this is an obvious one, I don't have my books with me and the SRD seems vague.

Thanks!

I'd say they end up standing, unless the AoO was used for a trip attack, of course. :D

The question I have is, do you get the +4 bonus for attacking a prone enemy on your AoO? :)

AoO's occur just before the threatened person's action -- so you;d make the AoO before he actually stood up (it starts before he completes whatever action he was doing... i.e. standing).. thus he is still prone... thus +4 vs prone target... thus, you cannot try to trip him with the AoO since he is already prone/tripped (you can't trip someone who is already laying down, since their status is already prone).

This question has been extensively discussed and many people agree with the abovementioned interpretation.

Anything else would make the already tough trippertwinks even worse.

Of course, many people don't.

If it's any help either way, the most recent response from Customer Service said "Yes, you can Trip on the AoO, and if successful, their Move action is wasted".

Whether the +4 applies was not addressed in the response.

Considering Customer Service's track record, that would translate to a definitive "no" on the option to trip.
