Giant ants ate my characters!

Nightchilde-2

First Post
Dang near a TPK Friday night, from giant soldier ants.

I'll skip straight to the setup. The party followed a giant worker ant back to the nest and started lobbing arrows at the giant soldier ant guarding the nest entrance. Another ant comes rushing out, and the party manages to take down the two ants, one of the characters drops to 0 hit points and most of the others are at least hurt.

I should prolly mention we have a ranger, a fighter, a rogue, an artificer (sort a like a sorcerer, homebrew class) and a psychic warrior. All level 1, so 2 soldier ants (CR 2 each) is at about the top of what they'd be able to handle.

You'd think the troubles they had with those two, they would've learned. Instead, they get the bright idea to rush the anthill.

You *did* notice there was no cleric in that list, right? Okay, just wanted to point out that they have almost *no healing.*

Out come two more soldier ants. And that's where it all went to heck in a handbasket. The dice started going my way, and butt started getting kicked.

End result: One PC at 0 from the first soldier ants, two more around the -6 to -8 range, one dies and the artificer is the only one not horrendously wounded (and that's only because she ran away and started pulling the others out of the way), and even she's down to less than 1/2 hit points.

Oh, and both of the soldier ants lived. One of 'em was unwounded at all during the battle.

I actually tried to convince them not to rush the ant hill, but do they listen? Noooooooo....

Is there a chance that they have learned from their mistake?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they will. They're all a veteran group of gamers, with the exception of one of the guys' daughters, so that's what caught me off guard that they would even attempt such a maneuver to start with. :)

Was my first "death by ant" experience in all my years of GM/DMing, too, so I was kinda thrown off. I never got the opportunity to have one of 'em sting anyone, so that probably would have been even worse.

Is rushing blindly into certain death something they do often? Do they usually overcome the dangers anyways? You say they are at level 1... have you just ended a high-level campaign?

I hope that the party will recover, and the adventuring will continue!

:)

Are you sure? I don't see a goatee!!

Well, I just started up a 3.5 campaign after running an Exalted campaign, which I ran after a 3.0 campaign that ended with most of the PCs in the 18-21st level range...:)

Yeah, I'm sure they'll be more cautious from this point on. I just thought it was funny. :)

I'm so jealous! I've started 3 newbie games since 3E came out, and I've never been able to work in the giant ant classic. I've got the others, ghouls, skeletons and zombies, goblins, trap mad kobolds, giant spiders, giant rats, but no giant ants!

Sigh, perhaps one day...

PS

Well, it's like the saying goes: Life is like a sandwich. Some days you eat the sandwich, other days the sandwich eats you.

Giant Ant TPK? You think that's bad? Heck, Saturday night the dice and a dire lion killed my wife's Paladin character in my Scarred Lands game. After the session I worked frantically trying to find a way to let her keep her character concept (i would have for any of my players who wanted to keep playing a character so early in the campaign, which is 3rd level). Best idea is a Reincarnation, but the party is terribly poor. I suppose they'll earn it on the barter system. Not to mention, they are seven days out from a place one could resonably expect to find a druid capable of casting the spell. No time at all to waste, so I hope the weather stays nice and they make good time.

I almost TPK'd my group last night with giant frogs. I found that really funny. We're playing the Temple of Elemental Evil, so I figure the encounters are only going to get harder from here on in.
