The mutation of the planescape term for multitalented gith into a general term for fighter/mage types originates from the WotC Character Optimization boards. I think it was JosephKell in particular, if you'd like to blame someone. I think it's handy to have a short slang term for a very common archetype.

I agree. But I think it's also handy that it not sound like a slang term for filleting an eel with a spoon.
